Now that Covid is more or less behind us, with travel starting to pick up in 2022, are we going to have a great travel year? Reply to this

In response to: Msg #210085 I will try to achieve a few goals in 2023. The first is to complete our ancestral visits, this time to the Eastern European countries of Poland (89), Slovakia, Romania (90), Serbia (91), and Hungary. Then I will try to reach my goal fo traveling to 100 countries by cruising to Bridgetown, Barbados (92), Kingston, St. Vincent (93), St. George, Grenada (94), Willemstad, Curacao (95), Kralendijk, Bonaire (96), Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (97), Oranjestad, Aruba (98), Scarborough, Tobago (99), and Port Of Spain, Trinidad (100) or some other combination of Caribbean Island nations...an easy way to get the numbers up! Of course, I will continue traveling after reaching this goal. Reply to this

A great question Bob!

Congratulations on nearing 100 countries. I've reached 100 identified territories with the Travelers Century Club but not near the 100 UN countries yet.... someday.

In spring we will visit the northern part of Chile and hop over to Easter Island for a few days. We will then go on to mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos. On our flight back we will stop in Panama for a few days.

We intend to do additional travel next year but don't have it mapped out yet. The ideas are certainly brewing.

I plan 3 city trips to
- Karlsbad/Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic)
- Paris
- London

and 2 big journeys to
- Japan
- Taiwan

Of them only Taiwan is a new country for me (if it hasn't been invaded by then) but I am still slightly below 60 afterwards.
I see the problem that reaching 100 is only possible of you go to very poor or dangerous destinations as well.
On the southern hemisphere as example I would love to see Cape Town or Rio de Janeiro but in both countries there a large slums close to the centers with a lot of crime. Even famous UNESCO world heritage sites like Machu Pichu in Peru are in unstable areas. So I am not sure, if I reach the 100 somewhen, even as I am only 47 years old at the moment and still have a lot of time left.

Thomas, We all have our own impressions of locations but I'm surprised by some of the countries you have concerns about. I've been to Cape Town and all over South Africa and felt it was very safe. I'm sure your country has areas that you won't go after dark.... any city does. Machu Picchu is very safe. I hope you will go. It is amazing.

Each of us has to travel based on our comfort level. Go where you feel safe. MJ Reply to this

I didn't mean to discount the current unrest. I was merely stating that friend have just returned from the area of Machu Picchu and there are no problems in that part of the country. Reply to this

In response to: Msg #210111 I looked at the countries you have blogged from...mostly the northern hemisphere. You have all of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. And you can do what I'm doing...visiting many Caribbean countries. I too try to avoid dangerous countries so can understand your concerns. Reply to this

I have plans beyond 2023:

2024 Indochina: Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos with guided tour.
Somewhen else: Namibia, New Zealand, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand
Southeast Europe: Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia
Other Europe: Andorra, San Marino, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan
After the war: Ukraine
Save Latin America: Costa Rica, Chile
Caribbean Cruise with Cuba and many countries and territories I don't know yet.

So this adds 20+ and more to my around 57 or 58 now reaching more then 80.
All of them with much less crime than South Africa, Brazil and - at the moment - Peru.

If I am still alive then, I think about more and maybe more dangerous ones.
Once I am around 80 years old the remaining risk is smaller and I might get more adventurous.
I even once met someone who visited Antarctica. Then I could say I did all 7 continents.

Well you were right. It isn't a good time to go to Machu Picchu. Right mow people are stranded there.

Rishikesh , India is a great place to visit. I have travelled here in the earlier days too. The main attraction of Rishikesh is the Ganga Aarti. India is a place where you will find the best Yoga gurus in the world. You can make a trip to the Himalayas from Rishikesh . You will be completely mesmerized by the natural beauty of the Himalayas. You can boat in the Ganga River in Rishikesh . Reply to this
