Advice and information on traveling with eye sight loss
7 years ago, March 9th 2017 No: 1 Msg: #200006
I'm a partially sighted female in my late 20s who's eager to travel, but restricted vission is holding me back. The thought of getting lost is terrifying when you struggle to see road signs, travel information, bus numbers and maps. Is there any advice anyone has that may be helpful? Are there such things as travel guides? Or a way of finding a travel buddy? Reply to this

In response to: Msg #200006 Hi, If you are UK based there is a charity called Be My Eyes that help with a range of things, a friend of mine is running a marathon as the 'eye's', other countries might have similar. Hope you find something and can set off soon. Jo Reply to this

You definitely someone to guide you if that's the case. Why not ask a relative to accompany you. Every place can be a jungle if you don't know how to navigate around it especially that you have a problem with your eyesight. I suggest, take someone with you, then prepare for your trip by researching online about city pass or discount cards by comparing city tourist pass from all the results you find online because they are very helpful if you want to save money. Good luck!

You might consider walking one of the many pilgrimage trails in Europe. Last year, while walking the Camino de Santiago, I met a Vietnam vet who had lost most of his eyesight from a war wound. He was accompanied by his wife and seeing eye dog. He walked the entire 780 km. My experience is that the pilgrims who walk these trails are the kindest and most helpful people you will ever meet, and will come to your assistance immediately...especially helping you to find your way. This summer I plan to walk my second pilgrim trail...the last hundred km of the St. Olavsleden to Trondheim, Norway. Reply to this

Wow, good to hear that. I love pilgrimage and I really adore pilgrims specially those who already visited Jerusalem. One of my dream travel this year is to visit the Holy Land. Well, certainly I will bring with me my family and will visit sacred places there. Reply to this
