Looking for off the beaten path, accessible places for around the world and back travel.

I know that many of you have traveled to some incredible places. I would love to have some advice as I am going to be taking a year off to travel and explore the world. Where would you advise going? What are some websites that have helped you? How did you save money in traveling around the world? Thanks!! christina😊 Reply to this

Well - huge questions! The world is full of places both on and off the tourist trail that are worth visiting.

Where have you been before?

What kind of things did you like - languages, culture, history, food, beaches, nature, photography?

Is your trip completely undecided at the momement or do you have a few places pencilled in?

Where would you be starting - returning to?

Some basic things to consider are:

Seasons - both the peak tourist seasons and the weather - both affect how many other tourists will be there.

Budget - some of the cheaper places are less visited by tourists, there maybe backpackers but not package holiday makers and daytrippers.

Saving money whilst travelling - another huge one - could fill pages properly discussing it - but the major factor is destination/location. Western Europe is expensive compared to Australia and NZ, which are expensive compared to South East Asia - etc.

After you've got your tickets your major fixed expenditures will be accommodation followed by food - the cost of these is linked to your location and the standards your happy with - I don't mind the odd cockroach, dodgy bathroom, and can sleep on floors so I can stay at the very bottom end of the budget places - I prefer nicer places though.

I found that the cheapest places weren't always the worst, there is always a going rate for cheap hostels/hotels in an area, spending a little time looking around you can find somewhere that stands out in quality without it being more expensive - so if you've got the time - look around, see four or five places before making a choice to stay somewhere - if I'm going to stay a while in a place then that's what I do.

Websites: there are a heap suggested in the Other travel sites forum - trying to encourage it to be a list of sites that people enjoy and like. Please leave comments about the sites in the forum - it will be a good way to share opinions and highlight the best.
