How do you fund your travels?
17 years ago, February 14th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #10727
I have a huge travel bug and want to go ASAP but the money I make in a year will not keep me going for that long with pricey plane flights and all. I want to know what you people do to fund your trips. Do you save some and work while your out and about? If so then what do you do for work in other contries? Do you sleep in a tent, eat grub worms and hitch rides? Well thats about all i can think of besides winning the lottery. So let me know, thanks. Reply to this

Bartending in a bar that caters to your nationality is always a popular funding solution.... Good money and you get to meet lots of interesting people. Reply to this

to save money before travelling...
cut all non-essentials out (that usually means drinking at bars, eating out, etc... I usually think in terms of "do I want to spend this $5 now, or have this $5 when travelling)
pack lunches and dinners when working/going to school.
work 2 jobs (normal + some crappy retail job)

As for eating while there...
self-catering saves you a lot of money by hitting up grocery stores while there and eating in your hostel, park, etc.
bring some dried stuff with you to eat - nuts, energy/power bars, fruit leathers, etc

If you're ultra cheap, you could try the couchsurfing website where you crash on other people's couches, guest bedrooms, etc.

If you're concerned about pricy plane flights, try getting a cheap flight to a popular destination, ie. london, etc and then slowly move from there via regional flights, train, bus, etc.
generally, slower you move the cheaper it is. more ground you try to cover, the more expensive it is. Reply to this

I became an "online" travel agent. You can stay in 5-star hotels with the best of upgrades and get paid to do so. 85% of travel is now booked online.....so you can lie on the sunny beach or hike through the forest and check your laptop computer a couple of times a day to see how many people booked travel on your website. You receive a commission from your own booking plus get discounts from most places since you're a travel agent...........all while the employees in the finest hotels treat you like kings & queens because you are a travel agent...........and they need your support and business so theirs can continue! The nicer hotels like Sandals will give you an all inclusive FREE week at any location in most cases if you book 10 or more people for at least 3 nights......the cruise lines treat you especially nice as well........and it's tax deductible since you are a travel agent and it's your home business.............but you DON'T have to stay at home!!!................you can travel the world. You'll need someone to deposit your commission checks in the bank while you are out having fun though.........or arrange to have them set up for direct deposit. Email me if you want to know more....this is too much fun to keep a secret! RD woofnpurrs@yadtel.net Reply to this

Ahhh yes, the tricky time-money balance...quite the conundrum.

If you are still young, study exhaustively hard and pick a job that you enjoy and that pays well--you'll be able to easily find lucrative work when you need to. A couple years of work...a year of travel...a couple years of work...a year of travel (and so the cycle continues).

Keeping your belongings to a minimum also helps. Wasn't it Jack Kerouac who said, "If you own a rug, you own too much"?

Best of luck,

poz

Hi, I have found a full accommodation service that will preserved your budget. With them you have the ability to travel immediately without certificates to mail in, no black out dates and no waiting. You can purchase the perfect vacation and travel now or schedule it months later. See the vacation you want, buy it and it's yours. It's that simple.

If you have an interest, please send me an e-mail and I will share additional information with you. Reply to this
