First time backpacking...
17 years ago, February 8th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #10594
Hi. Well I've made up my mind to head of travelling later this year and have just heard from work I've been granted six months off starting October :-) I guess I didn't have that urge to go when I was younger, but now with various changes at work, I want to take the opportunity to get away...

Basically, it's my first time travelling, and although I was intending to head off regardless, I've been fortunate enough to find a friend of a friend with similar plans so it's looking like we may head off together after she finishes uni. It was proving daunting going off on our own, so was wandering if anyone else was in a similar situation?

P.S. It's nice to see from other threads that leaving it till your late 20s isn't too old/late!!
P.P.S. Any recommended countries? Was thinking Nepal/India/China/Thailand/Oz/NZ - but others have recommended Bhutan/Indonesia/Vietnam/Cambodia - it's hard choosing!

Hi Shiraz,
Lucky you with 6 months off! Sounds like you are looking at some adventurous countries. As for the travelling with other people thing, have a look at other posts on the Travelling Forum about travelling alone vs in groups. Travelling can be a trying experience, and so being with someone you don't know could get awkward!
But that certainly shouldn't stop you - just be prepared that things may not always go quite to plan ...! Good idea to start thinking about it all now though. Reply to this

Hi SJC,

Great decision to travel. Seems you have not made up your mind on the intended destination. All the options are confusing.
As if that wasnt bad enough, I hereby add a little more to that mix: Kenya!
This is the last unspoiled wilderness - endless savanna, snow-capped peaks, 21st century side-by-side with natural, traditional centuries-old living!
I was born here, raised here, travelled all over and I still cant get enough of this country. I'd be glad to be your travelling buddy cum guide.
All I'm saying is - come to Kenya. I agree each destination is great in its own way-no challenging that. The decision is yours.
Feel free to contact me. Reply to this

With only 6 months I would suggest that you choose a region and do that region in depth...it's also more environmentally responsible in terms of air miles! Seriously you could easily spend 6 months in India alone without seeing everything. It's important not to try to do to much in a short time, otherwise it will all become a blur... Reply to this
