As the hubby and I cant quite excited about a trip to France from Australia with two toddlers on a plane, I was wondering what lengths some of you have travelled to get where you want to be?

I think the longest transit I have completed that was booked by a govt travel company (so cheapest flights they could find) was 36 hours of transit and we flew.... Perth to Singapore to Tokyo to LAX to Chicago to Harrisburg pennslyvania.

On a map they are nearly the opposite sides of the planet so I guess fair enough. But we had left 40 degree celcius sunny perth to arrive in below zero snowy USA to begin our new life, so certainly the other side of the planet for us 😊 Reply to this

Hello Tam,

The longest trip I've made was from Ohio to Antarctica. I flew from Dayton, Ohio to New Jersey, to LA to Hawaii, to Christchurch to McMurdo Base. I didn't have two kids in tow and I was very excited about living in Antarctica for 5 months so it didn't seem too bad. The flight from Christchurch to McMurdo was in a C130 so we were on bench seats shoulder to shoulder, knee to knee. We had to go behind a curtain to use the facilities. It was an interesting flight, fortunately I was younger then.

Another time we flew from Seattle to Fiji which is long but not horrible. But, to get to the small island we selected we had to take three boats. Each getting smaller and smaller. At the end we waded to shore with our belongings above our head. It felt very remote. Loved it.

The longest I've ever travelled by distance was 6 hours on a plane across the US, which is a drop in the bucket. The longest I've ever travelled by time, on the other hand, was driving 1500 miles in two days across half the US at the end of my roadtrip, to get home by Thanksgiving. Here's what that felt like: The Nation’s Longest Truck Convoy Reply to this

It's funny how when I was younger, to save a few dollars, I was quite happy to spend hours on buses or ferries or waiting. Now , as a family we weigh up the savings vs time. But anywhere from Melbourne involves HOURS!! Reply to this

Yes i agree that the travel there used to be part of the adventure but now with little kids, i'm just trying to get there so we can minimise the pain to ourselves and other passengers 😊 Reply to this
