Airport distractions - have they ever caused you to miss a flight?

Duty free shopping, restaurants, free wifi.....

I've just read an article regarding the distractions on offer these days at airports, and how they have in some cases caused people to miss flights.

2%!o(MISSING)f those surveyed had missed flights, while 15%!h(MISSING)ad nearly missed boarding because they were at restaurants or shopping.

I'd definitely be in the 15%!g(MISSING)roup, but fortunately have always made it in time when needing to sprint to the departure gate. Of the airports I've been through, Changi is the one I would probably get caught out in.....

No but I came very very close at Gatwick airport. I thought my gate was around the corner, so I went shopping...when I went to what I thought was my gate - it was a waiting room for a shuttle bus! I bonded with a random stranger as we panicked together while waiting for the shuttle bus. Reply to this

Nope!

For me, entering an airport is a strict discipline like a Shotokan karate kata. I stick to the set plan and never deviate from it.

Missing a flight in my eyes is simply not an option, especially when most of my flights are made with budget airlines who have a zero tolerance policy against late arrivals and where refunds for missed flights are non existent. Reply to this

Yep, we have the same philosophy as Cockle-- we are often on those non-refundable flights.

Our motto is if you can't be on time, be early!

Neither of us are shoppers. Reply to this

We almost missed a flight at Sydney airport (we were only transiting) and got completely distracted by the pretty Omega watches. We realised we were going to be late and legged it through the airport...of course the gate we were boarding at was at the opposite end of the airport to where we were.

We almost missed a flight due to travel delays getting to the airport, nothing to do with distractions at the actual airport - This has never happened before…honest!

It would have been the first time ever we missed a flight, as Cockle, Merry-Jo and Dave have said flying on non-refundable, budget tickets makes it a no-no to miss flights as it's like pouring money down the drain! Reply to this

I've come close. I had an hour layover at Newark, New Jersey after a six hour flight, and the terminal had a chair massage place with low rates. I was quite sore, so I got the massage. What I didn't realize is that my connection was in a different terminal, requiring a shuttle bus ride! I legged it through both terminals, and made the connection two minutes before the final boarding call. Reply to this
