Hey

Can you give us a few more details? What skills can you offer? Do you have enough money to support yourself if accommodation is provided? What kind of work do you want to do?

kris and kate,

thank you for responding, im willing to do just about anything on the up and up. i would love to do something that is helpfull to the community and people. When i was in thailand i got to experience something that most foreigners may never get to, i worked on the floating market with some girl i met and her family, selling and trading fruits and veggies to other local venders. Its one of my best memories traveling abroad. i also do construction for a living. As far as money goes, shouldnt be a problem. let me know what you think.
thank you Reply to this

These bloggers Hooker and Chris and Amy are currently volunteering in Cambodia so they might be a good start. They might be able to help you find a worthy organization to work with.

You have to be a bit careful about volunteer projects not being what they say they are, so get some recommendations from people volunteering there. Travelbloggers are usually quite open to giving advice!

I would also caution you to be careful when considering opportunities. Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but it could end being something that is not what you expected. For an extended period of travel, a lot of things can happen. <snip>

I think your best bet is to save up a little money, head over there, and find opportunities on the ground. A lot of programs you can find before getting there can be...sketchy. And whether you're looking for work or some kind of volunteering, you can almost always get a better sense of things from inside a country. Reply to this

there are five challenges for long travel:-

Challenge 1: Lack of privacy
Challenge 2: You feel homesick.
Challenge 3: You miss your normal diet and fitness routine.
Challenge 4: Quick relationships become the norm.
Challenge 5: The actual traveling part of traveling gets exhausting .

Given your construction background you could volunteer with Habitat for Humanity which has projects all over Southest Asia. See their link at http://www.habitat.org/intl/maps/ap.aspx.

Then there is always to opportunity to volunteer at orphanges. In addition to the bloggers mentioned above, Raelen recently volunteered in Phnom Penh as described in her blog Easy to be Heavy, Hard to be Light...also see previous and next blogs for her full experience.

And then there is always teaching English, although you would have to take a course if you wanted to earn a living doing this. My son is currently in Bangkok, Thailand about to take the CELTA course so that he can teach anywhere in the world. Reply to this

I would certainly consider teaching as an option. I've taught both paid and volunteering and it offers an unparalleled opportunity. Finding paid teaching in Cambodia is much harder than other Asian countries, but there are plenty of volunteer opportunities out there that at least offer free accommodation.

I have a TEFL diploma, but so many people I know teach and have no qualifications, so I doubt you would struggle finding such opportunities in Cambodia. You might have to pay a little for the experience to volunteer, but it's not such a negative I wouldn't consider it. Reply to this
