Hi, the company I work for is sending me to Port Harcourt for a week, I will be staying in the Novotel but after reading FCO and guide books I am obviously terrified, "kidnapping and shooting likely" I went to Lagos and before going scared the hell out of myself reading news bulletins and guide books and the FCO only to discover I loved Lagos and the people...
any advice or tips?
thanks tons
Lisa

Reply to this Welcome to the forum Lisa! I haven't been to Nigeria though have been looking at the possibility of visiting there.
Port Harcourt is in the Delta area which seems to be universally regarded as an area of "Extreme Risk" - even the New Zealand government think so, and they are usually more realistic than others.
It appears that the risk is mostly against expat oil workers, so if you fall into this category, you'll be at more risk. I suspect that Port Harcourt is more risky then Lagos, so keeping low might be a good idea. I'm sure your company will provide you with sufficient security, and if not, I'd be asking why.
I have been scouring the Internet for information for you, and it is difficult to find from local sources. I did find this one -
Oyibos OnLine - which is an expats site in Nigeria. There is a forum on security issues, but it didn't seem to have much there as well.

Reply to this Hello, I'm from Nigeria but haven't been to Port H yet.
I presume your company will take the necessary precautious measures to ensure your safety. You should ask them about this before agreeing to go to PH.
Lagos offcourse is less risky than PH since it doesn't have the oil issues as PH. If you work for an Oil company, pls don't mention that in PH. Keep a low profile and be safe. I have an American frd who interned in PH last year summer for one of the UN agencies. He was safe because UN provided the necessary security measures to ensure his safety.
Have fun and keep me posted
