Things to do in a Blizzard

Here comes another blizzard! Things (travel-related?) to do when you're snowed in.
13 years ago, February 1st 2011 No: 1 Msg: #127907
Well, another blizzard is on the way. I am trying to think of things to do to keep from getting cabin fever. So far I've thought of:

1. Read travel magazines and check websites (if there's still electricity!)
2. Realize that my biggest travel plan may be to shovel the driveway and go to the grocery store...
3. Wonder why the weather people are only right when they predict bad weather?

If you don't get snow, what do you do when you have ANY kind of bad weather?

Hi Meg,

Where are you currently located? I'm about an hour and a half from Boston on Cape Cod. We are fortunate that we have had a fraction of the snow that they have had in Boston this year but enough already. I've lived all over the country and the weatherman here is frightfully entertaining and has been accurate. His name is Pete Bouchard.

I had planned to run to the library today to pick up a book but it has been actively snowing for two+ hours and the plows are trying to do their work. They don't need me out there in the way.

The only solution to this white stuff is to book a trip! ............and so we did. Reply to this

Since I'm not currently traveling (though I have been getting plenty of snow in NYC) I am drowning in books to read, research to do and papers to write about it all. Although I suppose reading travelogues and planning your next trip might be a way to make that travel-oriented.

One should never forget how fun it can be to 'travel' where they live - I love taking my camera out to Central Park and various other touristy places in the snow. When government and academic institutions close because of weather, I take a snow-day, even if I do typically work from home anyhow.

And then if I'm really at a lack for something to do (which is rare these days, but no matter) I've slowly been compiling and formatting my old blogs and photos into photo-blog books.

And lets not forget, where there is internet access, there is Travelblog access! The forums can always use more active participants asking question and sparking discussion 😊

I agree we need more participation in the forums. How do we stimulate that? Reply to this

Well, this is the first question I've posted and I definitely feel encouraged to do it again! I'm still new to the blog and I was waiting to see where I could make comments that were relevant or helpful. Then it occurred to me to pose a question of my own. Your responses are so good I feel like I've read one of your stories! Reply to this

Meg,

We are glad that you have joined in on the forums. I've read your blogs and you are out there enjoying some travel. Keep writing for those of us who are currently not traveling.

Hopefully others will recommend your blog and you'll be on the front page soon!

Last week I decided to make a snowman, which I had not done in 30 years. I made the balls so big I would not lift them and had to wait until Dave got home to help me put it together. It was fluffy snow that was easy to make.

Snow.....snow......snow. I have always dreamed of a white Christmas, but of late, I'm quite content with the cool weather we have here in the tropics. 25 Celsius ain't bad, ei? Very pleasant, so long as it does not rain.

Hey Meg, so glad to find you here. Nice going. Hi to everyone! Reply to this

Usually during a blizzard, I take a blanket and coffee to the couch and look out the window.

I love all weather, except the damp and rainy type that happens here in Munich, Germany in January, which is especially miserable, when all the christmas decorations are no longer there to cheer the place up.

If you don't get snow, what do you do when you have ANY kind of bad weather?

We get snow, but never get snowed in, because here near the mountains in south Germany people are used to snow and know how to keep the motorways clear and the electricity on and the buildings warm. One time there was so much snow on the kindergarten roof that the roof caved in though, and the kids couldnt go there for days.

Another 'bad' weather possibility is very hot weather. Then I open the balcony and garden doors of my appartment, which makes a breeze blow through the house. When I am travelling in hot countries, I sit in the shade a lot, and take a few cold showers per day, and drink a lot of water. Very hot weather can be a risk for me, because for some reason I have got dehydrated while travelling a few times, which made me very sick for a day each time. First time it happened, I didnt know what was causing it, so I stayed sick with a massive headache for a few days, before the health section of the Lonely Planet set me straght, and I then spent the next few says sitting in the shade and drinking water with some salt all day every day until I got better.

Other bad weather I have exprienced was hurricane in Cuba. We really couldnt do anything except stay in our hotel and watch its progress until it was over.

Here in Munich, there are incredible summer storms which sometimes blow trees down. Sometimes I sit in the garden during them, because a really nice warm breeze blows and the lightening is impressive.
