Denial of US visa if with Middle East travel?

Is there a chance of getting denied of US visa if you travel to Middle East countries?

Hi, I'm planning to backpack through Istanbul to Cairo. However, a friend told me that I may be denied of getting a US visa if the consul sees that I've been to the Middle East. I'm about to work (most likely with an invitation) in the US and I want to travel first before embarking on that new journey. How correct is she?

There is no rule that says you cannot get a US Visa if you have been in the Middle East, particularly known tourist destinations like Cairo and Istanbul. You may be questioned about your travels there (why you went, what you did there) so just answer honestly.
