Camper Van living questions

Where did you park/go to the loo....??

Hi All

I plan on buying a camper van in both OZ and NZ. I would like to freedom park/camp as much as possible but I wonder where you can do this without getting hassled and when you do, where do you go to the toilet? The obvious answer seems to be what people do but surely visiting someone elses country and then crapping all over it is bad etiquette?

What do you think/What did you do?

Check out this news clip I found about it. Tell me what you think.

I find this odd.... We freecamped all over New Zealand, and never once 'crapped' on their beautiful landscape. NZ is amazing for having public toilets all over the place, so we used them at every opportunity. We never parked anywhere designated 'No Camping' so didn't get hassled once, these places tended to be close to public toilets. We were there in winter though so it was very quiet, maybe that's the difference.

As for Australia, again we freecamped everywhere we could, using a book call Camps Australia Wide which detailed what faclities were available at each site. Most of the time there were none so we were concientious enough to go off marked trails and away from any water sources and bury it. Anything non-biodegradable went in the bin.

I can understand why the locals are upset.... Annoys me no end when Cats crap in my garden and they don't know any better! 😊

Hi there

it is pratically very easy to drive campervan in NZ and australia. thou u may need to do some homework like where to spend yr night, how much it costs, but bascially, they offer competitive price... safety is most important. but rest assure, the New zealanders are mostly very friendly.

I didnt have much trouble getting around. as for thr wash room, i am deeply impress. even public toilets are so clean!

We would recommend getting hold of a DOC camping guide. This contains a list of government runs sites all across the North & South islands, most are free or are very cheap to stay in and are set in some of the most beautiful places.

All sites including the free ones have basic toilet facilities, some have showers (mostly outside) while the most expensive ones like the one by Mt Cook have hot showers & kitchens.

If nothing else you can stop by them to use the toilets but as Michael & Faye say NZ has plenty of toilets along the way so you should be fine. Reply to this
