Looking for people's advice on what month(s) would be best to take on this trip

Hi,

I am looking to do the Cape to Cairo route at some stage next year (hopefully do the Middle East after).

I am planning on taking 7-8 months to do it.( Maybe longer if I decide to do a side trip to Madagascar.)

My question is would I be better doing it from Sept/Oct to Apr/May or do it from Mar/Apr to November/Dec??

My main reason for asking is that I dont want to be in a part of Africa at a time of year when the weather conditions are at their most extreme. I have researched the "best" and "worst" times to go online and got some good information to a point.

The main thing I want to avoid is extreme, unbearable heat i.e. avoiding Sudan in the middle of summer.

I have also read a lot about the various rainy seasons. Now I dont mind rain, but I dont want to be somewhere, where the rain is so heavy that the roads turn to muck and you cant do anything.

The route I'm planning is something along the lines of: South Africa, Cape to Jbg via Lesotho (maybe Madagascar from Jbg), then Swaziland, Mozambique coast (not sure how far up yet), then depending what stage I leave Moz, into Malawi/Zimbabwe, then Zambia, then Malawi/Zim (whichever I dont enter from Moz), Tanzania, Kenya (side trip to Uganda and Rwanda, not sure whether to go from TZ or Ken yet), Ethiopia, Sudan, Egyot.

I will almost certainly look to start in either September or March, so any tips/advice would be much appreciated, thanks. Reply to this

Sorry, no tips but planning more or less the same trip, planning on leaving Capetown in march and going up the west coast into Namibia, Angola, Caprivi strip, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique Tanzania, will plan from there what route to take. Iwill be following your blog to see what tips you get. Good luck.
