7-day Family trip to the Carribean. Looking for recommendations on destinations - beaches and dense forests are of interest.
13 years ago, August 8th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #117242
Hi,
We are planning our first carribean trip this december, with a 1 yr old kid. We have seven days to spend, preferably on the best carribean beaches and lush green forests. Not looking for fancy resorts or casino type vacations.
Please provide suggestions on possible destinations that we should consider for this trip and any other advice you may have. Thanks in advance .... Reply to this

Francis Ford Coppola’s Blancaneaux Lodge is set in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, one of Belize’s oldest protected areas. The 20 thatch-roofed villas and cabanas are built into a hillside above the swift-moving Privassion Creek and waterfalls. Tropical gardens, native pines and palms surround the villas, adding a touch of privacy, perfect for those who want a rustic hideaway with luxurious extras.
Sandwiched between the coral cays of the Caribbean Sea and the calm waters of Placencia Lagoon, Turtle Inn sits quietly at the tip of a narrow, sandy 26-mile peninsula. It's the type of place where the sound of crashing waves is actually heard — and Francis and Eleanor Coppola designed it that way. After the original inn was swept out to sea by Hurricane Iris in 2001, the family led a two-year reclamation project to create a beachside refuge perfect for those seeking a stress-relieving escape.

You’ll want to spend your days as we did: lounging by the pool, venturing into the sea for a dip or a snorkel, bellying up to the bar for a refreshing turtle juice (the house beverage, made with coconut rum) or an expertly crafted piña colada.

The 26 guest cottages and villas have intimate screened porches that receive dappled light. The 26 guest cottages and villas have spacious screened porches and their own private walled courtyards with outdoor showers; once you’ve wrapped yourself in sumptuous white robes and put your feet up, you’ll find it tough to emerge. Luckily, the spa pavilion, which specializes in Thai massage and uses locally produced organic sea salts and coconut milk, is just steps away.

Not the Caribbean but Costa Rica is a great place to visit, volcanoes, hot springs, rain forest, cloud forest, black sand beaches, white sand, gold sand, pink sand, monkeys, sloths and more adventure than you can shake a stick at. I have visited many Caribbean islands, I chose to live in Costa Rica and I love it here. Thats my 2 cents.

Thanks MusicinMind,

Some more information would be quite appreciated - we have 7 days. What areas of Costa Rica (and places to stay) do you recommend ?

AirJordan - Arenal volcano for starters. Here you get to witness one big, sometimes angry, and always active volcano. It is one of the top 20 most active in the world and the most active in all of Central America.

From here you can do so many tours and activities. White Water Rafting, Kayaking, Windsurfing or Kite Surfing on Lake Arenal (3rd best windsurfing in the world) Canyoneering which is a sick new tour where you Rapell down a series of 6 waterfalls some over 200 feet, Horseback riding, Caving, cultural tours, the list goes on and on. Google the phrase "Rio Celeste Photos" and check out what comes up in Google. The color of this river and waterfall is real, and looks like it came out of the movie Avatar. It is caused by a chemical reaction when the 2 rivers meet. The Arenal area is good for 3 nights then I would head for the beach.

Manuel Antonio is very popular with rain forest coming down to the beaches and the sea. Capuchin monkeys running all over the place, Sloths, and very nice white sand beaches in this area. Also leaves you close enough to the airport that with an afternoon flight you can leave directly from the beach instead of having to overnight near the airport.

I posted some links in the Central American Forum here of companies that are good. You can find it at the top of the Central America Forum. I was formerly a hotel owner before I retired and met some great people while I was in the business, the ones I listed in that post are some of the best. I like crreferrals and desafio for the work they do rescuing animals here, both great but lots of good companies here.

Hope this is helpful

Thanks MusicinMind,

We are also considering a villa rental for 7 days. I will check out the list of companies on your forum post but please let me know if you have specific companies to recommed for villa accomodations.

We might take it easy and do just one beach and one rainforest during those 7 days with a villa accomodation at each location.

Travelling with a 1 yr old can be challenging to ensure you have a place that is child friendly. There are a number of places. I would think that Bryon Bay is a good decision when you finally make your dream trip down under. I would, however, recommend that you make it to the Whitsundays when you actually get down under.

St Lucia, Le Sport is an amazing hotel and spa (for the new mother). Reply to this
