Hey Abi

In SE Asia people usually drink bottled water rather than purify their own. I guess if you want to be particularly environmentally friendly and save on bottles you could use purification tablets. Or if you are going off the beaten track to areas where there won't be bottled water.

Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Some people brush their teeth with bottled water. We don't. If you are in rural areas it's probably better to use bottled water, but we don't in the cities.

It's up to you. Sometimes you will get a stomach problem. It's inevitable really. Reply to this

We always carry some as there has always been, for us, times when they've been needed. We use iodine rather than chlorine as the taste is a little better. This trip we are looking into buying a "steripen". This little gadget uses ultraviolet light to purify water (the same technique that most bottled water companies use) in a couple of minutes. It is fairly expensive but, on a longer trip, we think it will easily prove cheaper than the cost of all the bottled water and the environmental benefit is huge. Once you get to Asia you will see the huge issues they have with plastic waste, particularly bottles. Reply to this

I use a Katadyn Hiker Pro water filter - designed for hikers so its lightweight, cheap at $60, much cheaper than buying the 500 gallons of bottled water it can filter. I have used it to filter tapwater all over SE Asia, Egypt and Jordan, East Africa and Central and South America, and have never gotten sick (knock on wood). Reply to this

I would suggest that you use bottled water than using these water tablets as they are laced with chemicals. You also need to handle them with care if you have kids along. It would be helpful to travel in rural areas. Otherwise stick to bottled water. Reply to this
