VISA for Nomads { like 'His Dudeness' }

Hi.

I wanted to know how nomadic travelers who go to a country for Long durations say 3 or 4 months and have no fixed plans. My questions is , Visa requires that you give them a Flight booking and Hotel confirmation . Obviously if you plan on the go , you cant have a proper accomodation. So How do you get the visa ? Do you just show a dummy Booking ?

For example , I recently applied for Schengen Visa , and they gave me visa exactly for period for which i had accomodation.
