Planning to travel around Africa from South to North - Has anyone done something like this before?

Hi all,

I'm doing my round the world trip at the moment, currently in South Africa watching the World Cup, thinking to stay in South Africa for another few weeks before heading to other Africa countries, I have no plans where to go at this stage, but just thinking to travel all the way from Southern Africa up to the Northern Africa, just wondering has anyone done something like this before and would be able to give me some advise. Such as what to do and what is the best way or safe way to travel like this.

I'm also looking for some volunteer opportunity here in Africa, (orphanage, etc), any suggestions?

If any like minded travellers are doing something similar or happen to be in Africa during this period, please drop me a line, any suggestions or meet up would be really appreciated.

Cheers,

East africa will be a good place to go Kenya has saari expeditions you could visit the maasai mara,Uganda has the best white water rafting and gorilla trucking and also Zanzibar has the richest culture you would find anywhere in the world. We have an orphanage where you could volunteer while in kenya called hekima education centre. Hi Grace,

Thanks for your message. East Africa is the most likely itinerary for me at this stage, about your orphanage Hekima Education centre, do you have any more information about this that I can look at, such as how long is the program; website or something like this? How much is the cost to volunteer at your orphanage?

Thanks

Hello Beavis 😊

There are a number of members who have travelled very extensively in Africa. Since none are appearing on this thread, maybe their blogs will help, inspire... you and hopefully they and/or other Africa travellers will join this thread too. Here are some who come immediately to mind.

I have not done so myself, but have been intrigued from reading the travelblogs of others who have gone on the organized "overlanding" trips from Kenya to Victoria Falls to Capetown (you can also travel from London to Capetown via East Africa and back via West Africa)...just search for overlanding on this site, or google Africa Overlanding tours. For me the advantage of this option is the safety and security of having someone with experience leading the group and providing the transportation, food, accommodations (however rustic), and security. They are also inexpensive. Also, the comraderie seems to be great, with some exceptions. I have also followed the blogs of those who have biked the length of Africa. I wonder what happened to some individuals when their blogs just ended in the middle of nowhere...hmmm. Reply to this

I just ran across a blog by Cathy and Brent at http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/CathandBrent/ which provides details of their recent overland from Nairobi to Capetown. They give you a good sense of what to expect. Reply to this
