Checking out what vaccines I should have.....
Heya,
I'll be travelling through Central and South America ( mostly the latter) for about a year. I know I need to get Yellow Fever as its a requirement for some countries. I have been advised to also get Hep A, Hep B, Typhoid, Tetnus, Rabies and obviously Malaria tablets.
Does this sounds right or is there anything there that I sdhoulnt bother with or something essential I have left out?
Cheers.
Reply to this Claire, when I went on my travels I pretty much did the whole round you mentioned. I checked the US Center for Disease Control website for guidance. I imagine there is little reason to not get them (in the respect they won't likely hurt you to have them unless you have some allergy, etc). That said, I also met a number of people who didn't do any vaccinations and seemed to get along just fine on extended travels.
Others can perhaps comment with more authority, but I would say think about what kind of traveling you'll be doing. What I mean by this is ask: will you be in situations where you might be in close contact with people with Hep? Will you be in neighborhoods or nature areas where you might have exposure to rabid animals? Will you be going into remote jungle areas where you'll have more exposure to mosquitoes that might be carrying Yellow Fever and Malaria? Will you be in situations where you may have little choice but drink tap water, or will you have access to bottled water? Questions along these lines would be good ones to consider.
In the end, I don't think there's really any other vaccinations beyond what you mentioned I can foresee you needing, at least in my humble opinion.
