I had planned to go travelling with my wife around South America from November 2011 for approx 4 months. i recently suffered a bad slipped disc which left me in hospital. Although it is quite a way off I would like to know how this will affect me if I am not fully recovered. I am back at work after 4 months but am still in pain most days. Any advice would be appreciated

thanks

Depends what kind of travel you'll be doing. Not backpacking I assume? Reply to this

Hi mpbmpb,

I have travelled with a slipped disc and luckly had no problems, I did the Inca trail last year and plan to go trekking in Nepal this year - I find walking helps ease the pain in my back.

You have plenty of time before you go travelling to prepare your fittness - work on your core muscle, there are plenty of programs on the internet. Are you having any physiotherapy?

thanks for the reply's -

Snap shot stacy - i dont think we will be backpacking but do want to use local transport where possible. A present a bus journey in Manchester causes me pain so I am unsure how I would cope on a long bus journey in S America

discp stew - yeah walking does really help at present but it is sitting that is the problem for me - bad posture etc - so I am really thinking how easy it is to travel around and how uncomfortable buses / trains are. (I know we wont be looking at luxury as that is not the point of our trip) we will be taking regular breaks relaxing for few days.

Sitting is a problem for me too, I use a swiss ball when at my computer to help with my posture and use it for physio, I also do a lot of flying and I use small cushion to support my lumber. Unfortunately when it comes to bus journeys the driver is always going to hit the potholes!

i don't have a slipped disk and I can't do bus journeys either. I do have lower back problems and find sitting in a cramped environment for an extended period impossible. Is there perhaps I way you can do it by train? Reply to this
