A few questions on traveling in brazil, suggested destinations for my interests, best ways to get around, any overall useful tips.

Planning six week Brazil vacation from Hawaii early Oct., starting in Rio and would like to travel around and check out some neat places. I would like to stay near the coast, maybe check out some islands. We love surfing, kite surfing, getting the local flave, and just want to relax in some cool off the beaten path areas(not to far off the beaten path) any suggestions? What's the best way to get around, is Bahia worth visitng, any tips would be great.
