Which city to visit?

We have a week layover available in either Hong Kong or Shanghai in March before we travel through Southwestern China, Vietnam and Cambodia. We aren't interested in shopping or nightlife. Which is the suggested city to visit? Thanks in advance for your help.
Which places should we visit in or around either city?

Hi Roy. I have been to both HK and Shanghai, and love both. And I am not a shopper. In HK, I always enjoy the cable car ride up to Victoria's Peak for the panoramic view of the city. And the Stanley market , not to shop, but just to loiter around "smelling" and having a feel of the city. If you are traveling with children, there's Disneyland and Ocean park. If not, you may prefer Shanghai but would suggest that after a stroll at People's park all the way to the Bund (best at night), you may want to check out the water towns for a day. Zhou Zhuang is my fav. And Nanjing is just a train ride away.

Will be visiting Hongkong soon and they say that to find good deals in computers there.

Also, I've heard about a place in the New Territories that teaches making of traditional village snack, like passed down from centuries ago using firewood stove to steam the snacks in a traditional way. It's called sau fan. Reply to this

It's been awhile since I was in Hong Kong, but I remember getting such a kick out of riding the double decker bus along Nathan Road and the Star Ferry back and forth from Kowloon. I liked the cable car ride to Victoria's Peak too! Haven't been to Shanghai so can't compare them for you. Reply to this

Been living in both for years. HK will be more expensive...
HK...great scenery...great walks around the new territories and in the Islands.
Shanghai, not a lot to see in terms of culture, but an amazing and buzzing city.

I still think that if this is your first in the Greater China, chose Shanghai! Amazing museums, and walk around.

I lso agree with the tram, the Peak and the Star Ferry in HK! Reply to this

I like Hong Kong.. it feels like its a bit smaller than Shanghai and a little less crowd. it makes going around the city easier. the buildings are just so tall and so close to each other. I love the food they sell on the streets, although some are really weird... lol Reply to this
