Teaching English in China

Requesting Feedback whether or not to Volunteer abroad with Global Crossroad to teach English in China
14 years ago, September 8th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #85652
Greeting to all,

For sometime, I have been interested in volunteering abroad after I graduate from college and the time is rapidly approaching for me to make a decision. After doing some extensive research of what type of volunteer work I would like to do, I decided that I was going to teach English on the account I have aspirations of teaching it one day. Then I stumbled across a program with global crossroad.

In short, their program involves a long term comittment (at least 3 months) to teach English in China. The cost is relatively cheap and accomdation, food, etc are included. After teaching, their is a stipend and depending on the duration of my stay my airfare will be reinburst. Sounds like a good program I will be interested in, but after checking out a few post, global crossroad seems like it's not the most desirable organization. My question: I would like to hear from anyone who has experience with volunteering with global crossroad and whether or not I would be making a wise decision. Also, if anyone knows of other teaching programs, that will be helpful as well. Reply to this

Hi Steve O

I was looking into this recently as I had heard about a company that does the same kind of thing. I checked out their web site and thought it looked excellent, except it is not volunteering, you pay to learn how to teach english(not too expensive) and then they help you get a job in many different countries, including China, that you get paid to do. This site is specifically for Scotland, where I am from, but it says something about learning online and they may be affiliated with other countries like yours. It may be worth having a look. In my personal opinion.

Which comes with 2 years experience of teaching English in four countries. As a job.

You don't need to pay someone to teach English. It's a job. Thus they pay you to teach. The same way normal jobs work. To teach in China you don't need any kind of TEFL certification. So you don't even need to go through a programme of any kind. You can get many jobs, short and long term, teaching in China and they will pay you a wage to teach. English teachers are really in demand in China.

Check out some of the websites that advertise teaching jobs all over the world. Daves esl cafe and Tefl are just two for a start. They have huge boards advertising jobs in China.

Have a good look around before you sign up with any programme.
