Reply to this Years ago freighter travel was very cheap but it has become so popular that they now charge around US$100 per day.As Brisbane-Aukland can take over a week and the similar airfare can be under AUD$300 ,flying is definately the cheaper choice.I have had friends who have crewed on yachts ,usually Gold Coast-Aukland ,but they were very experienced sailors.I doubt a novice could get passage as this can be a very rough journey.
I am Australian but I tell everyone I meet who is going to Australia that if they don't add New Zealand to their journey they really are missing out.It is such an incredible ,diverse and friendly country.
