Travelling in Italy in August

I am thinking about taking my wife and teenage/college kids to Florence and Rome in the middle of August. We found apartments to stay in both cities.

But I hear it's extremely (oppressively?) hot and crowded. Am I crazy to do this? Besides it being the most expensive time I'm concerned that it may be too hot and crowded to be enjoyable. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. Reply to this

I've hit both Florence and Rome during the extreme heat of summer and had a blast. The key is, you are going to sweat, a lot. So just be prepared and know you aren't going to be looking stunning in all your pics, more shiny from all the sweat, but it's fun and festive and I never found the crowds to be a major deterrant. I've been twice in the summer and was always able to find off the beaten track places that were cool and shady. If you have places to stay then the major battle is over. One organization that I really loved was Scala Reale - they are a walking group that lead v. detailed and different archeological tours in groups no larger than 6. You might check them out as a good group to use as you'd probably tour with just your family and could stop and rest as needed.

Best Wishes!

I've also been to both places in August. Unless there is a freak cold spell, it is HOT. REALLY HOT. The tourist sites are very crowded. And unfortunately, many of the excellent family-run restaurants are closed because many Italians go on holiday for the entire month. Still, Italy is a beautiful country with tons to see and do any time of the year. If you drink a lot of water, are willing to take some breaks just relaxing in the squares soaking up the atmosphere, and don't try to overdo it in the heat, it is still a lot of fun in Aug.
