How much diving is realistic?

How much diving can I really expect to do on a shoestring budget?

I'm looking to travel for a year, and very tempted to dive as much as I can. I want to watch my budget, but I also don't want to miss out on some amazing diving. For example I *have* to dive the Great Blue Hole, and also in Indonesia. But I want to know how much diving can I expect to do on a shoestring budget?

Thanks 😊 Reply to this

The best way to dive a lot on a shoestring budget - is to find somewhere nice - with good diving - and then take part in a Divemaster Training course - it's basically an apprenticeship into the diving industry and you'll get about 60-100 dives out of it - generally the course costs between $600-$1200 USD depending where you are - I know of people who did their course in the Galapagos!

You'll be expected to work though - helping out in the shop, helping instructors etc - lots of theory and tests - at the end of it you have a qualification. Between 1-2 months is the normal time to complete this.

I did mine 3 years ago and I had such a good time! - Memoirs of a Divemaster Trainee

Afterwards there is the possibility of getting some work - not well paid work 😊 - but covers accommodation and food. If you love diving that much - becoming an instructor is the next step... Reply to this

Hi Ali,

My "dream"...and it's not going to happen would be to be a dive master for 6-10 weeks at a time...moving from one location to another one...not for the money...just for the diving.

Why it's not going to hppen, well...I've still have to find a proper international school next to great diving for my little family...both things simply don't match.

I bumped last week in the dive instructor with who I did my advanced PADI 5 years ago in Phi Phi...she has been there for 14 years....diving each week the same 20 or so max dive sites....this would make me sick very very fast!

Great suggestion you've got there...just an add on to Maria, avoid Thailand for it...nice 22 years old something end up "selling carpets"...meaning last week in Phi Phi,there seems to be more dive masters around thand divers...

Wow...doing it for 3 months in the Galapagos...this would be great!

Next dive....Gili.... Reply to this

You could volunteer to be a hostie onboard a liveaboard boat, there were at least 3 places in cairns looking for people. Included is accommodation, food, dives and dive equipment. I wished i could have done it but i didnt have the time. Reply to this
