i currently have a year long round the world trip booked for september when i travel through asia, oceania and south america. i currently play internet and live poker for a living at home and hope to continue to do so when im away. i know its legal to play online here in the UK and in oceania although i am not sure with the legality in asia or if it is illegal would i be permitted to play as i of UK nationality and would be playing on online sites that are legal in my country of nationality. also if anyone has any experience of doing this for an income while travelling if they could share it. i would like to know how reliable the internet is in places to make this viable as loss of connection can cost a lot of money. obviously poker will be taking a back seat as i visit many wonderful places but i will still need an income while im away. thanks in advance for any help or advice and please do not mention any internet sites etc on which you might play as im sure it is not permitted. Hello Scott 😊

I dont know anything about playing internet poker. There are a lot of accounts created on this site advertising internet poker and gambling. We delete them. Since they SPAM so often here it makes them seem dodgy to me. I cant imagine this type of gambling being fair, let alone a way to make a living.

Having said all that, would those giving Scott advice avoid posting any links at all to online gambling sites.

Let's ignore poker and broaden this thread. I'm sure the focal point of Scott's query is how easy/reliable/wise is it to receive payments to a credit card while you are abroad, as a means of funding yourself. This could relate to people who, for example, do translations or receive donations to keep them going while they are on the road.

Does anyone have any experience of the practicalities of working freelance while travelling, that would help Scott and many others?

hey mell. i specificly stated for people please do not mention any sites that they play on etc as i dont want anyone advertising or spamming. i will not be offended if you delete my OP as i dont want to encourage this if you have had problems in the past or if my thread encounters any problems.

thanks scott Reply to this

What about we wait and see what comes next on this thread and what the other moderators say, before deciding what to do. 😉

scott my thoughts:

legality- it really might be a country by country analysis, but in most places when even illegal, it is illegal for the provider (ie PS), not necessarily the user. so for the most part i'd feel pretty comfortable. there might be somewhere in south east asia that is different, but that is my general understanding

drop outs- well first id say, are you planning on bringing your own laptop? id say this is a must, as you may not be able to dl the software if playing an internet cafe and with the lengths of some tournaments it doesn't make sense to rely on the hours of a public cafe if you are really needing this money for a living.

- also along with that, if just playing cash games, id try and gear your play to sites which have the best help such as the 100 second timers they use or something similar so if you do drop during a hand, you atleast have a fair chance to get back on.

- i don't know enough about high tech air cards, but id recommend possibly looking into and purchasing the best as a few hundred on that could make a huge difference in the long run if you are playing a lot in random spots

also depends on what you use for withdrawals/transfers. gotta make sure you have access to the funds once winning.

i do not play for a living, but have gone through periods of playing a lot and being profitable and this is definitely something ive thought of to add some income here and there. Reply to this

thanks for your comments. this is the kind of thing i was looking for in responses. i will be taking a lap top which i should be able to use in most hostels and there will be lots of places with wi-fi i should be able to use. i think i will be mass tabling SNG rather than MTT when i am away as this is a gaurenteed steady income and i dont really want to be playing for 8/9 hours at a time playing MTTs. this way i can play when i want and make a good hourly rate doing so. for my withdrawals i usually get checks sent to my home address so i will contact support and get them to change address and my parents can put my money into my account so that shouldnt be a problem. you touched on the point of high tech air cards and i have heard of cards you can get that you can use if you lose connection. i will do more research into this as i will definately need some sort of protection for my internet. if anyone has any advice on this type of thing then your comments are very welcome.

thanks for your comments annie much appreciated. enjoy your travels 😊

I've met a few travelling south east Asia - playing poker during the day to cover costs - and for one it was working well. Legally - you may be breaking laws in a ton of places - practically - I don't think you have to worry!

The advantage is - playing in the day here is when the most drunk americans are online - so the easiest pickings... Reply to this

I think in some countries, even though internet cafes allow access to gambling sites, they have to declare it to the government, so if the player wins they have to pay tax.
