Hi, Friends:
Maps of China, please check the history of China.
Which map indicate Tibet is/was a independent country?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Qing_Dynasty_1820.png
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:ROC_Administrative_and_Claims.png
(Note: see the Xikang Province in the map. Tibet is bigger than it was before PRC)

I think it's normal for one to live anywhere in his country. Americans can live in Hawaii(Native Hawaiian is a minority in Hawaii, needless to say Native Indian in US mainland) , also can live in New York. Chinese can live in anywhere(Tibetans can also live in Beijing etc). Here, I want to mention that Chinese are not equal to Han. Chinese are comprised of 56 ethnics, such as Han, Hui, Manchu, Tibetan, Miao, Bai, Dai, Mongolian..........

I also think Chinese should protect the Tibetan unique culture. But I think it's difficult to find a balance point between the modernizing and the protecting the tradition.

Some one does not like Chinese gov. I think it's normal. I also disagree some policies of Chinese gov. No one gov can satisfy its every people.

I do not like those foreigners who break Chinese law (The Anti-Secession Law). If they break Chinese law in China, they should be punished. At this point, I support the gov.

Thank you, friends! Enjoy China, Enjoy Tibet! Good luck!

I didn't read through the whole thread as it's 3 pages long, but I really have to say that a question like that makes me angry. Not angry at the person asking, but at the western media. I think it is horrible how the media portrays china and their style of governing. Everyone who has got a little common sense in them can see that the chinese communist party is offering an alternative to our failed political system of representative democracy. I think it is horrible of westerners listening to our media and believing we should export our style of governing on the rest of the world, I mean: this is so imperialistic and neocolonialist.

It is perfectly fine and safe to travel through china, have fun on your travels and if you get the chance talk to some chinese about politics.. they have an interesting view on things (from farmer to banker to taxi driver!)

😊) sorry for that guys

sergio

Ps:

Eight American activists jailed in China for protesting during the Olympics said Monday that they were interrogated for hours, deprived of sleep and accused of having ties to the U.S. government.

The activists were sent home late Sunday during the closing ceremonies.

that is perfectly right, because it is so hypocritical to protest in china for human rights when (at the time) guantanamo was active and there were special schools for mentally retarded kids where they would lock the kids for hours and days alone into rooms. The other day one of them hanged himself. If you care about human rights do something in your own country before you point at others. Reply to this

Maybe those who care about human rights standards base this on the standards they believe should be upheld worldwide. I for one do.

For me, it is certainly not a matter of deciding that one violation is worse than the other and therefore people from countries which committed attrocities against human rights standards are not entitled to protest against what they see as wrong.

The media is just reporting the news Geyi. They report news about all countries. Unfortunately visiting China is not enough to find out what is going on behind the scenes, with the lack of free speech etc.

I don't like the dalai lama, he is a totally lier.

What does he lie about? I am a fan of the Dalai Lama. Everything I have heard him say makes sense to me. He is truely one of the worlds good people, in my opinion.

China is in the process of saving the world from a major economic crash/meltdown worse than we have ever seen before or our forefather have ever imagined.

Credit where credit is due.

I would not like a D@alia Lamia tibetan ruled country try and fix what is going on now in the western world.

Maybe this would have worked in the 70's, but get over it Gen Y's and messed up Gen X's.

China rules Tibet - Simple.

The US rules the rest...!!! (let have a look at there worldwide human rights issues).

Would you give more detail about how China is going to save the world from a major economic crash, Scott.

This thread is about a possible political situation in China. But feel free to start a topic to compare world human rights if you want.

Really? What has the Dalai Lama said that you dont agree with?

China rules Tibet - Simple.

Politics is never simple.

The US rules the rest...!!!

The US government does not in fact govern all the countries of the world.

Anyway Timreh, this thread is about the possibility of unrest in China during the Olympics....

There was none and it was run as the most professional event in history......Nice!

I often wonder why so many object to regions having their independence.

Imagine New York trying to break away from america or Berlin trying to break away from Germany.. Yeah that will work!

Do you mean they were slaves to the Dalai Lama?

Yes, when you install God like qualities through forced entities (take egypt circa 500bc for an example) people will just assume they are working for a better place above.

It has been a life long wish of mine to see Tibet, But I'd like to travel as responsibly as possible.
I'd like my money to end up in the pockets of the Tibetans, not the Chinese.
Traveling on my own seems not an option, so I'm willing to join a group. Does anybody know what the best way is to go about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

quote from deleted_125963

I am stunned by someone's crazy speech.
Firstly, you seem to provoke the relationship between tibetan people and Han Chinese(actually not just Han).
Secondly, you seem to have a mind of Charity. The tour-operators(whoever they are) provide the travelers the services, and the travelers pay that. That's the deal, not charity.
Be nice, please!
In a word, You are not welcome to China.

I think saying that China will save the world is an exaggeration somewhat. Their economy is prospering. A small percentage of Chinese are benefitting greatly, for most there have been slight improvements economically from what there were before. But overall, it is easy for China to make bigger profits, when wages and work conditions are abysmal.

But, how is the Chinese government going to reconcile allowing western style capitalism into their country with their communtist ideals? The Chinese people will surely question this, wont they?

Thanks all for your response.

I am stunned myself at message number 3. Is Mr. Anonymous Chinese?

I am not trying to offend anyone or make any relationships worse. But I'd like to travel responsibly and ethically, hence I put this question up. I have read many books on Tibet and China and even though my knowledge is not deep enough to understand the intricacies of the problems between Tibet and China, it is clear Tibet is oppressed by the Chinese. I don't want to make things worse for the Tibetans by helping the oppressions further (i.e. giving all my money indirectly to the Chinese army). Reply to this

@INTBI,

The best way not supporting Chinese army is staying out of China(so you donot need to pya the visa fee) and not using things made in China.
Hope you can and you will.
