Have you taken a trip to volunteer?
23 weeks ago, November 16th 2023 No: 1 Msg: #210912
I have a friend who has done a half dozen volunteer medical trips around the globe. (Ecuador, Syria, Poland, Ukraine and more).
I have a friend who has done volunteer work with chimpanzees, pandas and lynx in Africa, China and Slovakia.
I'm thinking about doing some volunteer work and would like to hear what volunteer work you have done and what went well and what didn't. How was your housing and general conditions? What company and the length of time? Reply to this

Yes! Yes I have. My favourite time was working in a small orphanage in Tanzania. It was sad situation but rewarding and I’ve kept in touch to see how the children, who are now adults, are doing. Recipe for the Ice Cubes Reply to this

Andrea, how long was the assignment and what kind of accommodations did you have? Reply to this

I have volunteered in Guatemala (Guatemala - Construction volunteer after earthquake) and Uganda (Construction Management in East Africa). Accommodations in Guatemala City were at a colonial hotel...nice. Accommodations in Uganda were very basic. Reply to this

I'm not surprised to hear the accommodations in Uganda were basic. Reply to this

I guess there is structured volunteering and... ad hoc volunteering. The first may include accommodation/ and maybe meals provided. The latter, our experience of 2.5 years during Covid's peak in Laos, we just fell into. We were there, help was often needed on many fronts and we were happy to contribute; we, initially, received nothing in return. However, after months of being the primary health responders for the village, teaching the school-deprived children, decorating, building, helping in the fields, ya-de-ya it was insisted that we pay no rent and a stream of gifts (a tray of eggs, a kilo of meat, bags of tomatoes or potatoes...) flowed. And... we were merely treated as family. It was a happy serendipity for us and them. Of course as I type we have returned and our continued volunteering is massively outweighed by the love and kindness we receive from our family and the community as a whole. Reply to this
