Canadian Customs: Can I bring...

mp3 player? MOSTLY legal tunes? Backups of DVDs, and pirated DVDs?

Before you judge me as a terrible bootlagger, I would just like to give my defence.
I never used to be into music. It was the furthest thing from my mind. My family stumbled upon Napster some years ago, and they all got into it. I did too, eventually, but it took years before I had a CD worth of pirated tunes. Anyway, eventually I started listening to alot of music (all pirated). I eventually realized it wasn't fair to just take these songs from hard working musicians, and started buying CDs. I have a nice collection now (some still in their wrapping, as it were). The same goes for movies. I buy SO many movies now, to justify my piracy.

My question is, what can I bring through Canadian customs? What I'd LIKE to carry with me:
-mp3 player with MOSTLY legal music (SOME of it's pirated, so for the sake of discussion let's just say it's all pirated)
-DVDs with a different region code
-DVD backups of my old, damaged movies
-Pirated movies with no region code

And if I choose to grab some while on vacation;
-Bootlag CDs / DVDs
-Fake Rolex

Thank you for taking the time to read this rant. Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED! Thanks alot, travelbloggers! Reply to this

The term is bootleg or bootleggers. ;-)

So, what exactly is it you're talking about here? Suitcases full of CD's and DVD's, or just some that you are taking on a trip or bringing back from a trip?

I'm no expert, but I'd say Customs couldn't tell pirated mp3's on a mp3 player from a hole in the ground. And who's to determine if your movies are backups that you take with you while you travel (just in case your bag gets stolen) or bought from some shady store.

A single fake rolex isn't going to raise any eyebrows either... if you have 20 of them in your case, then maybe. Importing fakes is against the law, and US customs seizes tons of huge cargo containers full of fake Gucci, Prada, Versace, etc, purses every year. But someone coming home with one on their wrist... I think you're ok.

This is not expert legal advice, just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth. Reply to this
