Azerbaijan, Baku the names conjure curiosity. Ask your neighbour and see if they even know where Azerbaijan is. TRAVELSAPIEN has visited a few times taking in the coast line up to the Russian Boarder and across land viewing a diverse country with a deep rich history. Most know Baku because of it's high profile with OIL historically. Today OIL still tops the agenda and business activity. Baku is a great city for shopping, dining, and enjoying the old city that has existed for centuries. The Maiden Tower stands out on the waterfront area facing the Caspian. Azerbaijan is one heck of a travel adventure out side Baku and adventure types would love the challenge. Others will not find the general travel or accommodations up to expectations however if you do not expect high levels of 5 star consideration the experience is worth it. Fantastic rugs. Fantastic caviar. Fire Temples, and old caravan trails. Still finding their feet as a travel destination but for those willing to be at the forefront you should have fun. It is not expensive, excepting Baku itself, and the people are absolutely gregarious and friendly. TRAVELSAPIEN suggests it is on your map as perhaps a Grand Caucaus tour so to get a taste of the region. It is an amazing part of the world, still unspoiled by plastic touristiky novelities.
