Peter - I just signed up to get certified...diving is something that has been on my "bucket list" for a while now. I'm getting ready to begin a world adventure next October and I figured that I better get certifired before I depart.

Where are some of your favorite destinations? Reply to this

Hi Shelby,

Best 3 dives places are easy
1. Galapagos
2. Tubbataha (Philippines)
3. Palau...went there twice.

Did all of them in 2008....but also this year, South Red Sea, Zanzibar, great white shark out of Kleinbaai next to CPT...but doesn't count as diving, El Nido (Palawan).

2 more diving trips this year...had also the chance to dive...Bahamas, Grenadines, Grenada, Turks & Caicos, Maldives ( 5 times), Bali, Vietnam, few times in Thailand, Bora Bora, Mauritius...and the list should get way longer by end of 2009....

You are going to become an addict very fast if you start a world adventure...I've stop to have dream places where to dive, I just get a list which is getting shorter after every trip....this is fun! Have fun!

Hey, I've only been on a few diving adventures since being certified in 2006. I was certified in Key West, Florida and the diving was great. It's nice for beginners and I highly reccommend it.

I'm now waiting to finally graduate high school to go to some other places. This blog has been very informative as to where to go.

Has anyone seen The Great Barrier Reef and is it all that it seems to be? Reply to this

Hey guys!

I love reading your dive blogs, they keep inspiring me to plan all my trips around diving!
I’m hopping to get my instructors NAUI certification by next summer.

Started off diving a few years ago off Tenerife, the Canary Islands, anyone else ever been diving there??? It gets deep quick and is too cold for coral, but it makes up for it with all the beautiful volcanic formations. But they also have a raging sea urchin plague, which keeps things interesting…

Been diving off Florida as well, even went down into a fresh water spring and decided I really don’t like diving caves =P

I’m currently in California, diving about twice a week and I absolutely love it!! Even all clad up in my 7mil suit, gloves, boots and hoodie. Diving through kelp forests on a clear day is jaw dropping; I highly recommend it, as awe inspiring as walking through a redwood forest. And It’s lobster season here now, they even let you catch them with a tank!... The buggers don’t stand a chance!!

Going for a weekend dive trip in three weeks to Catalina, the Channel Islands, hopping to dive along side sea lions!

I have done a lot of diving, but less so lately as my travel buddy is only 3.

My favorite spots have been

Galapogos - by far the best place for the big life
Similan and Surin Islands off of Thailand
Red Sea - one of the best 3 weeks trips I have done....Egyptian pyramids/temples/tombs, diving, petra in Jordan
Fiji- awesome snorkling and one of the best shark dives I have ever done
Great Barrier reef in Australia
Utila&Roatan in Honduras (Utila has some of the best diving for the price)
Ile St Marie(Nosy Boraha) in Madagascar - My most off the beaten path diving
Croatia and South Africa - my least favorite dives.....but a least favorite dive is 100X better than the best day in the office.

Hi Sofia,

Don't worry....8 years old and it's the bubble maker, 10 years old and it's the PADI....I know as a parent, we can't wait to share more with our little ones.....my son is 22 months from is 10th birthday!!!

Let me know if you need any advise on Palau, I've been there twice the last 3 years and can say that I covered it pretty well....

Can agree with you on Red Sea....and I'm planing Fiji for next summer.

Did you dive Darwin's Arch and Wolf Island....these were also my most amazing dives....

have you done Belize? How would you compare it to Utila?

Have fun...my next dive is in 5 days...somewhere in paradise...

Hey- I got open water certified in Utila Honduras and advance certified in Roatan Honduras. Have also dived in Panama and Costa Rica. I love it. Will (hopefully) be diving in Chile this Christmas. Anyone know anything about diving Chile? Reply to this

I think it will be a while before Pulau as I will wait for Sofia to be able to dive for that one. I live in Miami now for 3 years and have not dived in the Keys (I know, I am pathetic). I have never been to Belize, but I think it would be similar to Roatan/Utila. Being that Belize is closer for me than California, I will probably head down there soon. I do not remember what I ate yesterday and definitely dont remember the dives I did in the red sea 5 years ago, not sure if it is the age or repetitive nitrogen narcosis.

I have not heard about any diving in Chile, but Galapagos is not tooo far away!!!!! Reply to this

Im really keen on learning how to scuba dive, maybe you can help me! Im going to be around Malaysia and Thailand for a little bit early next year, and i want to get a diving certificate and explore this next frontier. Where do you recommend i do this? Im on a budget, so i dont really need to go somewhere famous and mind-blowing if its also rather expensive. Thanks for your time! Reply to this

Lot's of places around...if on a budget, a lot of people go to Phi Phi...nice mix of things to do if you don't know the region.

Have fun!

Now based in Ireland, I'm thinking about the Dead Sea next. Can anyone recommend a particular location/dive company?

Hi Ellen,

Dead Sea....there is no diving there....with so much salt, you can read your newspaper in the water and once you go out of the water...you are not wet! Are you sure you speak about diving?

If you are thinking of Red Sea, let me know, did it last July...was quite nice, can give you few ideas...

Regards from Seychelles where we dived this morning...

Peter

Ok...good try to check if we stay focus...

If you love wrecks...head to North Red Sea....if you like everything else, head to South Red Sea on a liveaboard.

It's one of the cheapest live-aboard place I've seen in the world, and quality is not that bad. You fly down to Marsa Alam. Do get on a liveaboard, landbase is less than average!

I used Tony Backhurst and can only recommend them. The have two or three different itineries. For the pics, just look at my blog...you may find other diving ideas also.

The only easy way to reach Marsa Alam is by charter flights from UK.

Have fun!

Hi there,

Got my open water in Vietnam a year and a half ago, dived a few times in between in Cambodia, Thailand and Florida, and just got my advanced open water in Malta.
I found that in general people never mention Malta as a good diving place, not sure why, but it's really worth the visit. Especially at the north of the island, near the smaller island of Gozo, the water gets very clear, and there's quite a few cool wrecks as well, and plenty of marine life, like tuna, barracuda, octopus, sea horse, etc. Admittedly, November till April is not ideal for diving, as it gets a bit cold and rainy, but other than that it's great, and it's cheap and easy to fly there from all over Europe.

Another amazing dive I've done was from the island of Koh Chang in Thailand. It's near the Cambodian border, not as touristy as Phuket and the islands around, and the water was so clear it was unreal, at least up to 30m visibility, but I was told we might've had more, highly recommend it! That was in February, not sure how it is the rest of the year.

Now, I'm trying to find a somewhat cheap and warm holiday for the end of december, where diving could be a possibility. I'd be flying from London. Is Egypt my best option?

Cheers, and happy diving! Reply to this

Hi Etienne,

With Egypt, you'll have for sure the cheapest flights....the problem, is that if you speak of Christmas period, all flights are expensive and same thing for hotels....with the current economic crisis it may be easier.

Look at flights first...you may also try Cuba or Belize...

I'll be diving in Oman around that time....to hopefully see some big stuff...dream of diving with humpback whales...

Have fun!
