How have people been getting around between regions of Africa?

Hi guys
I will be in Africa for a few months in September, and all I have right now is a ticket into and out of Johannesburg. Has anybody done much extensive travel in different regions of Africa? For example I plan to start in the South and go up the East, then skip Central and get over to West French Africa, back to Joburg. I've looked at the SAA African Airpass as one option but actually it just doesn't seem that cheap, and all flights connect through Joburg anyways. How have people been getting from Point A - B, for example from Kenya to Senegal? Are local carriers the way to go? Is overland from South Africa all the way up to Kenya relatively straightforward, could I do that on foot? I've done border crossings etc in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East... but I'm not totally hardcore and I will be traveling with a laptop and camera, so I would avoid taking say a chicken bus or something up. I just don't know about Africa.
Any suggestions on what has been done would be appreciated!
Thanks! - Amy Reply to this

Hi

I haven't actually gone yet, but I'm planning to do an overland journey from Cape Town to Cairo so I've come across lots of tour operators. For South Africa there's the Baz Bus, and then for more extensive journeys look at companies such as Oasis Overland, African Trails (which is the one I'm booked with) and Dragoman.

Hope that helps!

Hi there

I did some extensive research into the African Airpass with SAA and found it costly. I have booked return to Kenya with a stop over at Ghana for the beginning of September with Kenya airways for £645. This includes in total 3 stops in Kenya, one to change planes on my way to Ghana, one back from Ghana to Kenya in October where I plan to make my way down to South Africa and finally one from Kenya back to London.

The overlanding part I'm hoping from east to south will be part of the adventure. I figured out a route to Tazania from Kenya
KENYA - TANZANIA SHUTTLE BUS TRANSFERS but I havent planned any further from that point and Ghana.

I was thinking of the baz bus in South Africa (I have no concrete overlanding plans yet from east to south :-). I had an itinerary much like yours to begin with Amy but couldnt find a way to overland independent of the costly tour operators from south to west on google (or via UK agents - if it wasnt South America, Asia, the states or australia they just didnt know lol) so I swapped it around a bit. I'm sure you will be fine when you get there. Keep us posted for hints and tips if you find a way. I leave this weekend but will probably be back on the boards mid september for help!! Reply to this
