Hey Carrie and John

Budget in Central and South America will depend a lot on which countries you'd like to visit. For example in Central America, Guatemala and Nicaragua are very cheap whereas Belize, Costa Rica and Panama are pricier, not quite european prices, but not a long way off. In South America Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia are the cheapest places to travel, Peru a little more expensive, and then Argentina and Chile, although again, pretty cheap by European standards (these are the only countries we've visited so I can't advise on Brazil or Venezuela). As a sweeping average, if you are going to be spending time in both cheap and expensive countries, a basic double hostel room would be in the 12-15 euro range, and a good dinner for two with drinks around 10 euros. If you are staying in hostels you can save money by cooking for yourselves...supermarkets are very cheap compared with Europe. The cost of tours and trips varies massively depending on what activities you are interested in, ie a guided city walk will be a lot cheaper than a glacier trek or white water rafting!

We have met people budgeting anything from around 20 euros to 45 euros per day per person so its quite hard to advise precisely! it is an amazing part of the world though, so you'll have an great time however much money you can get together

good luck with planning

Hi Natalie

Colombia was one of my favourite countries, and we didn't plan on going there in the beginning, just changed our minds after lots of people we met on the road told us how great it was! It also has the benefit of being reachable by sailboat from the Caribbean coast of Panama if you are headed there - we didn't do this trip but have heard good things about it.

Having said that, I haven't been to Venezuela so couldn't tell you which is the best of the two for heading down to Brazil!

Travelling has become costlier in these days as oil prices are shooting into sky. Airline prices is one place where you can plan some budgeting apart from your idea of staying in hostels.
Generally small Private Jet Companies which operates need based trips are cheaper when compared to commercial airlines. Wherever these jet chaters are available take the cost advantage.
