Looking for tips and tricks on how to deal with hot temperatures while travelling.
We are about to leave the comfort and luxury of our air conditioned house, cars, and work places to travel the world budget style and I am looking for any experiences and tips on how to deal with hot climates. How do you find the energy to tour around during the day? Is sleep possible in sauna like conditions? How do you avoid walking around dripping sweat?
Any tips and tricks are much appreciated!
Reply to this Hi Matt and Lindsay,
My best tips would be:
1. Drink a lot of water (not sure where you are going but I generally suggest bottled water). If you are in a place where you can drink the tap water, keep a big bottle with you and keep refilling at your hotel. It might be a pain to carry, but better than dehydrating!
2. If you can, avoid drinking a lot of caffeine and alcohol while out in the heat - they dehydrate you.
3. Wear light, breathable clothing such as cottons.
4. Don't be afraid to take frequent breaks and just rest in the shade. You'll actually see more than if you keep going constantly and end up exhausted and overheated.
5. When i did the Breast Cancer 3-day walk this year it was quite hot and they gave us bandannas to soak in cold water, and then we tied them around our heads, necks, arms, whatever we wanted when walking. It wasn't the most fashionable but it definitely kept us cooler. Anything that keeps your head, hands and feet cool seems especially helpful to me.
6. For sleeping, you could use a similar trick to what i mentioned above. Put a cool cloth on your head (like you do when you have a fever) before you go to bed. This can help drop your temp down a bit which will at least help you get to sleep.
That's all I have - no magic tricks but hopefully it helps! By the way, where are you traveling to?
Reply to this Hello Matt and Lindsay 😊
I usually sit in the shade and drink plenty of water. It would be wise if I also avoided drinking coffee in hot weather but I dont. I also avoid walking around too much.
I take a cold shower before going to bed and sleep without clothes or covers. That usually keeps me cool enough to prevent sweating.
During the day I wear light loose fitting dresses and sandals.
A couple of cold showers during the day will also prevents things like prickly heat.
