Well I'm not the best person to offer advice on this topic (never been a women, never travelled in the Nepal area) - but I'll put a few points down.

If the area is renowned for having a bad attitude to women such as Morroco then avoid travelling alone. Find some companions, find companions by staying at the most popular area in hostels or hotels that have a reputation for attracting backpackers, and then meet some like minded souls. It has worked for me in Central America - I don't see why Nepal would be different. I've not only had an excellent time travelling through this - but also made friends for life. Reply to this
