Hey guys,
It is my dream to go to South Africa next year. Anybody been there already and can tell me what is definitely worth seeing and making?
Thanks!
Lisa
Reply to this Cape Town is one of my favorite cities.
I was in Cape Town in 2002 for 2 weeks and again in 2003.
Cabs are plentiful and cheap -- Don't worry about renting a car. I felt very safe in the city but I have several South African friends and every one has had their car stolen.
Here's a map where you can see most of the available hotels and their prices
Capetown Map
You can rent a cell phone at the airport for about a dollar a day and have free incoming calls... very nice if you plan to ever split up.
Hotel Locations:
Try the city and the wine country: The central city in Cape Town is very safe clean and nice. Walking around there feels comparable walking around in many European cities. Outside of the city center are slums that are prone to crime because their standard of living is so low. Habitat for Humanity offers some great volunteer events in the slums in the day time, but stay clear at night unless you're with locals. Beyond that are some really charming country side wine estates that have hotels integrated. I stayed in the city and on some wine estates and liked both. I don't really have a favorite but I'd encourage you try staying in the waterfront area and then maybe a few nights out in the wine country.
PS. While in the city be sure to catch sunset on Lion's Head. Its a small mountain and state park right in the center of town. Its free and you get panoramic views of the oceans and the town.
Reply to this There loads to do, but how long do you plan on being here? What time of year are you coming? Cape Town, Winelands, Safaris, Mountains, Surfing, Eating...what do you want to see - nature? Vistas? Animals?
Let me know and I can give you some recommendations on what to do in your time frame of visit. I live here so I can help...:-)
Reply to this You should definitely not miss the Kruger Park or the Mpumalanga Lowveld. Visit www.siyayasa.com where you will find some nice pics and a lot of information about the Lowveld.
Reply to this I lived in SA for nearly 10 years, and I would suggest Cape Town for a few days, a lot of people spend half there holiday thre and while it is a great city there are so many other great places to visit. The Zululand Coast between Durban and swaziland is great, with hluhluwe / umfolozi game reserve is there and the St Lucia wetlands park.
Plus Kruger it is one of the top 3 parks in Africa, (apparently), when friends came to visit if I couldn't take them I always used
www.krugertours.com They had a range of safaris, the walking safari was one I went on which was fantastic, but family and friends booked all sorts of different trips through them, camping, treehouses
Plus if you like to walk the drakensberg mountains are good, either in the south where you can walk in the foothills or to the east of Lesotho where giants castle is. In fact even if you don't walk it's a great place to sit and just be.
Reply to this Cape Town is an absolute must see!!! There are loads to do during your stay.
Reply to this Hi Lisa,
I grew up in South Africa and can't wait for you to experience it's unique rhythm and culture!
I'd say Cape Town and the Garden Route is a definite must!
There are inexpensive short tours around the Garden Route taking in:
- the wine region
- the cango caves
- a quad bike safari through a reserve
- abseiling over the Tsitsikamma waterfalls, and ... if you're really really brave... the highest bungee jump in the world over a beautiful gorge.
Hope that helps you.
Have an amazing time there!
Cheers for now. Reply to this Hi
I am new to this blog and you may have been to South Africa already. If not, go to my website www.ekotracks.com and view the Country Highlights for a list of the most important places with a short desciption.
