Last Wednesday night, I went out with my friend Dan, his cousin of 27 years, Caito, and his other cousin who is 32, Neno to fish from the shore with these huge fishing poles. I have never been a fan of fishing anywhere but in open sea. In the open sea you get huge fish that bite left and right, but anywhere else it reminds me more of Tom Sawyer sleeping at the river´s edge than of an MTV reality show where the kids pull up fish one clip after the next - no patience involved. So, we planted the fold out chairs on the beach, dug the holes for the rods and cast as far as possible out into the pitch dark where the only notable difference between the sky and the sea is the ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca March 6th 2006

Lake Titicaca is situated 3800m above sea level, and is the highest lake in the world upon which proper boats can sail. It straddles the Peru/Bolivia border, and a couple of nights ago we arrived in Puno, on the Peruvian side of the Lake's shore. We had to cross the border on foot, so got off the bus and crossed the bridge leaving Bolivia. Eight seconds within arriving in Peru, we had our passports snatched by policemen "looking for drugs". They were, in fact, looking for money, or bribes, and proceeded to take us into rooms to search us. Before I went in however, I gave my back pack and wallet to Eleni, who hadn't surrendered her passport so easily (they missed her because there were so many of us, but you're not allowed to say ... read more

So it's been an eventful last few days. The last entry, I believe, was just before we went to the Parade of Champions, the winners of the formal Parading of the Samba Schools. To sum up, there are no words that come close to appropriately describing the event. (I seem to be saying that alot lately). We arrived at 2100hrs, to see the Sambadrome, the site of the event. This is a really long structure, made entirely of concrete. It was constructed by the famous Oscar Neimayer, the same architect who designed the city of Brasilia. To get an idea of what the Sambadrome is like, imagine the Commonwealth Stadium, stacked about 6 lengths back to back, with a long white stretch of 4-lane pavement in between the 2 sides of the stadium. On one side ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires March 6th 2006

If this thing has worked properly then everyone should have got an email alert that the site has been updated. If you´re looking at this and you know me but, didn´t get an alert mail, send me a mail at i.carmichael@ekit.com and I´ll add you to the list for future updates. Had a slightly more interesting week this week. I signed up for one more week at school. I´m learnng lots, speaking little more and probably understanding a bit more of the spoken word too- all good. I have spent hours trapesing around book shops trying to find The Lonely Planet´s guide book to South America to help me through my travels over the next few months on this continent. When I finally found a copy (the Holy Grail as it is now known) they wanted ... read more

So... we arrived safely in Santiago - I nabbed the window seat to once again compete with the Japanese on tacky photo taking. View of the Andes was spectacular - seemed stranged to see that just an hour after leaving BA. Due to us being on a pretty tight schedule we decided to leave Santiago immediately to go onto Valparaiso as we have to fly back out of Santiago next month and can spend more time there then. Valpo was just a two hour bus ride out of Santiago and just from the airport to the hostel we met lots of lovely Chileans helping us with directions etc. All of us have made a note to ourselves to be more helpful to lost tourists when back in the UK. Picked a random hostel out of the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires March 5th 2006

Several hours ago, when I was uploading my pictures from Chile, I started to worry about the time. It was about 8:00, and I was supposed to go out with an Argentine girl I worked with, Noelia, and her friends. Shortly after, Noelia sent me an IM on the new gmail chat, asking what time I wanted to meet up. I said it was up to her, so she said, "Ok, how about after dinner, like at about 1 or so." Such is life here in Buenos Aires. Rewind: I arrived about midday on Thursday the 2nd in Buenos Aires. Originally, I was supposed to stay with the family of a friend from Michigan. His grandma got sick and that didn't work out. On top of that, my boss Victor, and his family, were going to ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Pisco March 5th 2006

We left Lima on Wednesday 1st March and travelled 200km south, down the Panamericana to Pisco. Travelling on a public bus for the first time was interesting; not only was the bus station in one of the poorest parts of Lima, one of the 'friendly' bus company employees tried to rip us off by telling us it cost an additional 20 soles (4 quid) each to put our luggage on the bus (having paid only 19 soles each for the entire journey!!). He even had the cheek to write us a receipt - no way Jose! No wonder the other workers were calling him a monkey! Pisco is situated in one of the many oases (oasi?) which punctuate the desert lying between the Andes and the Pacific. The main reason Gringos stop off at Pisco is ... read more

Today we went to the salt flats they were so.. white. Its a lake with alternate layers of salt and water. As it had been raining too there was some water on top. It was so surreal that places exist like this, just loads and loads of salt. It was so bright and the sky was so blue it was really fantastic. The world looks great in white and blue. We went to a hotel made only of salt, it was really strange. never imagined being in a building made of salt! What an amazing day... ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota March 5th 2006

My friends Jonathan (English) and Maria-Paula (Colombian) got hitched in Bogota on 4th March 2006 and this was the cause for much celebration for all concerned, and a chance for me to meet up with friends and family. A welcome break in the solo travelling, and one of the most impressive weddings I have ever attended (great food, lovely service, lavish reception, free whisky etc). Colombia was in many ways as I expected, but there was still room to be surprised by the level of sophistication of this city (hell, the bars were better than London, and I had the finest restaurant burger that I have ever had). Colombia has a bad rep internationally, and there was much sucking of teeth and anguished expressions from friends when they learned I was travelling there. I knew, of ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago March 5th 2006

I moved in with my Santiago family last Monday, and I'm still amazed at this city. Most especially because of the contrast to San Dionisio and Bolivia. This city is so modern and has some really beautiful parks and architecture, as well as a very efficient and safe metro and public transportation system. Most of us are indeed living in one of the most well off areas of Santiago, Las Condes. I've gone running a little bit and it's a fun way to see more of the area. There are lots of other people out biking, running, and walking. I stick out a little bit as a gringa, but when I'm by myself it's not too bad. Everyone is always on the go in this city, and Chile's population is actually pretty diverse in terms of ... read more
