Purmamarca has everything you need in a small town: cute plaza, friendly people, good food, wide variety of places to stay, interesting culture and spectacular landscapes. This blog (and all my blogs) is on my website with lots more photos. I went to Purmamarca for its famous hike around the hills behind town, which they call Rainbow Mountain. Having seen Cusco’s Rainbow Mountain and the Painted Hills in Oregon, I wanted to see how this one compared. It’s so completely different that I don’t think it can be compared. The hike is a simple walk and there is a road for those who don’t want to walk. You can do it in half an hour if you are just there for the walk. If you want to stop along the way for photos, give yourself an ... read more

Do hotels deserve a whole blog to themselves? No. Does Pristine Camps at Salinas Grandes deserve its own blog? Absolutely. This blog is available url=https://heatherjasper.com/argentina-blogs-southamerica-travel-tips/pristine-camps-salinas-grandeson my website with lots more photos . In a country full of spectacular places, Salinas Grandes are one of the most beautiful places in Argentina. Pristine Camps has made that beauty accessible for people who want to see the full 24 hour wonder of the salt flats. The Salinas Grandes salt flats in northern Argentina are the most otherworldly place I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in spectacular deserts before, especially in the Four Corners area of the US, but I’ve never seen anything like the salt flats. It was like being on the moon. I was very comfortable but also kind of felt like I was in a spaceship because of ... read more

This blog (and all my blogs) are on my website with lots more photos . Say Hueque organized my trip to Salinas Grandes and I highly recommend them for trips anywhere in Argentina! Llama caravans brought llama wool and other products to trade from Bolivia to Argentina for thousands of years. The llama caravan tradition didn’t end until 2018, making Barrancas one of the best places in Argentina to learn about Andean culture. The first excursion I did from Pristine Camps was to Barrancas, a canyon with dramatic orange cliffs and an even more dramatic history. Hundreds of pictographs and petroglyphs line the canyon, mostly depicting what are obviously llama caravans. Visiting the canyon was fascinating and my gu... read more

(Day 279 on the road)"If you need the oxygen bottle, your climb is over and you are going down". This was the firm stance of the guide at the climbing agency in the centre of La Paz. I was there because I had finally made up my mind to try to climb Huayna Potosi, a 6.088 metre mountain that is very accessible from La Paz. I had thought long and hard about whether I really wanted to do it. And why, really? I was quite worried about the altitude. Also, the actual ascent starts at 1 am, so there would be little to no sleep the night before. But as a good friend told me on the phone: I had been at the altitude of La Paz / Lake Titicaca for over a month now; I ... read more

Final blog We left Colonia in our little hire car, it had only done 30,000 km but had a dodgy clutch. We has expected to pay 220$ but by using card you avoid the tax so it was only 180$ . Our first stop was on the outskirts of Carmelo going further north and west from Colonia. If you look at a map of South America Uruguay and Argentina are separated by water, the rivers Plate, Uruguay and Negro. We were staying the night at a wine lodge as my birthday treat to Chris , a nights stay and a parrilla and it was very much the plushest place we stayed. Its called El Legado , here is the link if you want to check it out. www.bodegaellegado.com.uy I was using maps.me as a satnav and ... read more

Blog 6 When I ended the last blog, I had just seen the tango show. The only thing I had left to see was the famous Ateneo bookshop, set in an old theatre. I had marked it in my maps.me app and got in a taxi. It was miles away and the taxi was 2,000 ARS, by far my most expensive. It was an Ateneo bookshop but not the one I wanted, I got the correct address and then another taxi, 1500 pesos !! It was beautiful and deservedly is said to be the most beautiful bookshop in the world. I got a taxi back to where I had eaten breakfast as I had left my, very expensive, water bottle, it could have just added to the expensive day. Thanks to my VPN I watched the ... read more

(Day 267 on the road)If you read the following blog entry and think "wow, Ben's writing skills have certainly improved", I am afraid I have to disappoint you. Most of this entry was written by my good friend Suzanne, who came to visit me in Bolivia for ten amazing days of travelling together. But before I hand over, a quick recap of the days leading up to Suzanne's arrival in La Paz: My entry into Bolivia from Peru was as easy as possible: A minibus from the travel agency picked up all the passengers at 4am in Puno, the boat from Puno (Peru) to Kasani (Bolivia) took about 5 hours (straight across the beautiful Lago Titicaca), the immigration formalities in Kasani took less than 3 minutes, and a minibus took me to the lakeside town of ... read more

Blog 5 Puerto Madryn and Back to Buenos Aires So I woke up early Monday morning and headed off in search of dolphins. My drug concoction seemed to have worked. I went with a lovely company called hydrosport where Patricia welcomes everyone and Marissa is the guide. There were only 18 of us on a 72 seater boat, it was a bit overcast but the sea was calm until we got to the edge of the bay and even then it wasn't too bad. It was a lovely trip but sadly no dolphins ! We did get a great display from the young sea lion pups though. There was a Manx shearwater, they never land , except on water, and migrate to Scotland. We were offered a free trip on Wednesday. Marissa mentioned there are Orcas ... read more

This blog with more photos is available on my website . Say Hueque organized my tours in Ushuaia and did a fantastic job of finding the most environmentally responsible local tour operators. I highly recommend them for sustainable travel in both Argentine and Chilean Patagonia! I spent three weeks in Ushuaia and got to do just about everything! Here are my favorite hikes and places to get outside and enjoy the spectacular nature that Tierra del Fuego has to offer! Alarkén Nature Reserve The easiest hikes with fantastic views leave from Arakur Resort. There are three trails, all clearly marked and easy to follow. They are public trails on the Cerro Alarkén Nature Reserve that you can... read more

Time To explore BA and then head home… It was basically only about 24 hours with no sleep this time... Saturday morning was our debarkation day in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The letter in our cabin the previous night said everyone leaving the ship today had to be out of their rooms at 8am. We waited downstairs in the atrium (peacefully actually because this was not the waiting area for very many other people apparently) and we got off the boat around 9:30am in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We were walked off by a Costa staff member and taken to our luggage, then our luggage was put through a scanner LEAVING the cruise. In all the time I’ve cruised, this has never happened. I asked why. She flatly said “to check for drugs” so apparently, this is standard ... read more
