So when I arrived in Venezuela I was a little disoriented (see previous blog entry). Not just because of the whirlwind of different modes of transport that I took to get here, nor the problems with getting money once I arrived (which incidently lasted into the next afternoon but was fixed once I was able to first get into the bank and not just use the ATM, then second call my bank in the states and get the fraud alert removed from my ATM card....yes, I was in Guatemala, Mexico, and Venezuela in the last 24 hours...duh, why is that so hard to believe???), but also because Venezuela is one of those countries that I know very little about in terms of its tourist attractions. Other than its current state of politics with good ole Chavez...I ... read more

We arrived in Cuidad Bolivar tired, confused and in bad need of a long shower! We had left Merida at around lunch time on the 18th of June and it took over 24 hours to arrived in Cuidad Bolivar. First a 4 hour bus ride from Merida to a town called Barinas..... then a VERY hot and sweaty 5 hour wait in a really dodgy bus station in Barinas, which we had to sprint across a duel carriage way to catch (it was either run like the wind or wait until the following day!)......followed by 14 hours on the world´s coldest bus to Cuidad Bolivar. We thought we came prepared for the bus trip this time! We brought extra socks, fleeces and even used towels as blankets but no joy.... we were still freezing!!! And to ... read more

This is the story: I won a trip to Canaima in a raffle organized by the company where I work. The trip was planned between November 2 and 4th, and in total we were 30 people from the company travelling together. Definitively the national park Canaima is an amazing place, I recommend it to all, it was an unforgettable weekend, in which we manage to totally disconnect ourselves of all the worries of our day to day. Though the trip had it´s disadvantages, it was totally worth it, since we had the opportunity to get up in the morning with a sight towards the Angel Falls and have a bath in it´s waters.... read more

With the financial meltdown diverted, we are now onto ANGEL FALLS! To our pleasant surprise, the tour we paid for turned out to be legitimate and actually quite nice. After the drama with the slimy tourist guys, we felt a little anxious that we were still being ripped off, but decided to just go with it and crossed our fingers and toes for the best. We caught an overnight bus from Caracas to Ciudad Bolivar at 9:30pm, and caught a flight to Canaima National Park early the next morning. The plane was a little 6 seater and because it was a clear and sunny day, we were treated to an awesome view of Venezuelan countryside. It was so beautiful and lush! Upon arrival at Camp Wey Tupuy, we were debriefed and told to pack ourselves a ... read more

Hello, We have been travelling to Canaima national park by cesna airplane five persons from Ciudad Bolivar, and arrived in a village 2000 people after a one hour flight. We continued by powered canoe upstream the river for a 60 km ride, with low waterlevel, and it took us a while to get to the spot from where we had to start the one hour walk uphill, to reach the bottom of the Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, being 983 meter high. We took some pictures and enjoyed the moment, and after killing twentyfive mosquitos we decided to go back to the startingpoint. By the time we got there it started raining quite hard, so we crossed the river in the dark to reach our campingspot for the night, sleeping in hammacks. Waking ... read more

Our first organised trip was to Angel Falls. We had to get a mini bus to a place called Paragua (it kept the price down) & then we got in a 6 seater plane to take us to Canaima. It only took 25 minutes. Thank goodness. I felt sick as a dog afterwards! It didn´t help that the pilot read a newspaper whilst flying the plane! Everyone else lunched at Canaima, I was too busy feeling sorry for myself to eat, then into a boat for the start of our trip. We went close to the bottom of 3 waterfalls & felt the cool spray on our faces, beautiful. Then out the boat for a walk where Jurassic Park was filmed. We walked underneath one of the waterfalls. Very exhillerating, we looked like drowned rats. By ... read more

Well it has been a busy week or so, so there is a lot to catch up with. Angel Falls was fantastic, there aren´t enough words to express how great the trip was. It started off with a 4 hour bus journey then a 25 minute flight in a Cessna. There were 6 of us (5 tourists and the pilot). It was all OK until the pilot started reading the newspaper! He did manage to put it down though to land the plane. After lunch we then got in a boat to visit the first waterfalls we would see. We then went a bit further downstream and got out of the boat to walk behind another waterfall. Well we thought we were walking behind it but in fact we walked through it and got completetly soaked. ... read more

We arranged our trip to Angel Falls at Cuidad Bolivar airport. Walter Bernal (junior) at Sapito Tours was very friendly and we got a much better price than that offered through Dragoman. We arrived at the airport on the morning of departure at 7 am as requested. But we didn't actually leave until 9 am. Ourselves and one other squeezed into a little plane crammed with a cargo of toilet paper and Coca Cola .. only the essentials. It was just over an hour away and we had a wonderful view of table top mountains. Arriving at Canaima we had a fantastic view of the beautiful and magnificent waterfalls there. We were happy when the old plane finally touched down having spent some of the trip wondering if it would rattle apart. Our guide was Jose ... read more

Up at 5 this morning to get the boat back to the first camp...left in the dark and soaked in the boat as usual... Once at first camp we had breakfast, and then set off to another set of falls, called Sapo Falls which we were going to walk under. Once we got there, it was the most awesomely cool thing I´ve ever experienced. Basically there was a small stone ledge just under the waterfall so you could walk through it to the other side. Camera´s were useless, but Attila had a waterproof one so once he sends me some pics I can put them up. The falls were so loud and the water pressure so powerful, that we were told to put one hand over our ears while walking through. The amount of water falling ... read more
