A slightly misleading title because this is really things I've learnt in Venezuela and Argentina but it isn't quite as catchy a title! Also apologies for those looking forward to this last week but was travelling and from now until May don't expect much as I have a wedding to prepare for then recover from! Venezuela hasn't changed much in 4 years...apart from Chavez's grafitti which is much bigger and shinier than before Banking isn't easy in Caracas...it took my friend over an hour to withdraw about 100 dollars in cash, from his own bank account, involving numerous phonecalls and emails to authorise himself to take out his own money. The Caribbean is always warm...even on a cloudy day I was loving the Caribbean Sea more than the air around me! I love seafood soup...had it ... read more

I have been wanting to go to Caracas for the past year now. There were many obstacles that did not let the trip happen. I was set to go on November 4, 2010 but my mother passed away the day before, so I obviously had to cancel. On Thursday January 27, 2011 I finally flew to Caracas. Luckily, the hostel that I reserved back in November let me have credit for my reservation. I left Indianapolis at 2:24pm on Delta flight 1613, which was an MD-88 aircraft. I was in coach seat 16B for the one hour flight to Atlanta. I had about 2 hours of waiting in Atlanta until my next flight. At 5:30pm, I was onboard Delta flight 589 to Caracas. I was seated in Business Class seat 1C for this 4 hour flight ... read more

Ensitunnelmat Caracasin Simon Bolivar lentokenttä sijaitsee reilusti varsinaisen kaupungin ... read more

Hi Guys Greetings from Caracas again - I is made it back full circle to my point of landing on the South American continent, one month later, and with so many great experiences since the last time I was here. I fly back to London tomorrow evening, via Madrid, and am taking back with me some memories of some fantastic places and people that I have met along the way, and it really has been just amazing (I´m not just saying this!). This last week has to have been the most amazing yet though, really. I hope the photos I´m gonna attach to this blog shortly will testify to the beautiful places I´ve been and seen - incredible! Last time I wrote I was in the Andean highlands of Western Venezuela, from where I took two ... read more

Hey Guys! Wow! I´m here, I made it to the South American continent - I can´t believe it, it just seems strange that looking out the window now I´m actually looking out on South American people, land, birds, trees.... Strange feeling, but maybe it´s just the jet-lag...! Here I am in Caracas, after a mammoth 20.5 hour door-to-door journey, which generally went well actually apart from an hour´s delay leaving Madrid. Feeling a bit jet-lagged to be honest, and a bit disoriented, but really excited about what´s gonna happen over the next 4 weeks, and really excited to be able to write about it in this new blog, which I think I´ve now got the hang of. Just spending my first 2 nights here in Caracas - I think I mentioned that it ain´t the safest ... read more

Up early we departed Hostal Marsella for the final time catching a taxi to airport Mariscal Sucre to start our journey to Venezuela. Having read up on the foreign office and its travellers’ advice (including against all but essential travel to certain areas and against all travel to others) the journey, arrival and sty were a somewhat daunting prospect. At the airport, leaving Quito was a bit of a hassle. We had our bags searched for food after declaring we had bread, queue one to check in, queue two to buy airport departure tax, queue 3 to have the airport tax checked, queue 4 immigration stamp out (huge queue), queue five bag scanning, then wait. A number of people in the immigration queue had got to the airport too late and were having their names called ... read more

It´s taken me 2 and a half weeks to get round to this, but finally the promised blog is underway! As I write I´m sitting in my hostel in Córdoba, Northwest Argentina, but rather than giving a blow by blow account of my journey to get here, I think it will be significantly less painful if I write something more akin to a highlight reel of the past two weeks. So here goes! The first stop on my South American itinerary was Caracas, Venezuela, a city somewhat preceded by its insalubrious reputation. Most of the reading I had done was full of warnings to be on my guard at every turn, to sleep with one eye open and the like. Initially I wrote this off as nothing more than the usual over-cautious travel writing to which ... read more

Hi, this is my first entry for s America. I flew from Belfast to new York for a few day then on to Caracas. And to be honest I wish I never went near the place. I booked in to a hotel called hotel visavila (an over priced one) for two nights. To be fair the hotel wasn't that bad I think it doubled as a love hotel. Me and my girl friend got of the plane and was immediatly hounded by black Market money changers but was kindly assisted by an airport cop around the airport safely and put into a taxi to our hotel. I was scared shitless no lie and my girl friend was too. With the two of us with almost no Spanish it was a very dawnting place. It may have ... read more

Welcome to my first entry on my journeys in South America! I will do my best to update the blog as and when I can! For me, my trip across South America started here in Caracas. Getting off the plane at Simon Bolivar Airport, the first thing which struck me was the immense heat: somewhat of a change from snowy old England. Neither the passport control nor the customs inspectors seemed to care at all about anyone so no problems getting through the airport security. But before I could get out the door I was pounced on by illegal black market money changers (you have to buy your local currency on the black market or else get a much worse rate at the official Government exchanges - everyone does it so my Lonely Planet informs me). ... read more
