That's right, we went to Uruguay today! Check another country off the list (and update the map)! Unfortunately, this did mean we were getting up at 5:30 to catch the ferry across the Rio Plata. Since it's an international ferry, and our professor is insistent on allotting far too much time for things, we showed up at about 7:00 for an 8:30 crossing. Fun fact: depending on where one considers the mouth of the Amazon to be, Rio Plata is either the first or second widest river in the world, coming in a bit over 140 miles at its widest point. Where we crossed, our boat trip took just over an hour. We got in to port and off the boat by 10:00ish, but didn't really get moving until almost 11:00. We started with a quick ... read more

Its been some time since we last wrote. We left Torres del Paine quite exhausted and in need of some comfort. When we arrived in El Calafate we chose a very comfortable hotel to stay in for two nights. Our main purpose in this area was to visit Perito Moreno, a massive glacier which can be seen from quite close. The glacier was indeed beautiful and massive, with the most fun part being the waiting for chunks to break off and fall in the water. One was especially dramatic: given that the glacier is about 70 meters in height a chunk of ice falling off makes for a pretty large splash! Another sight that we considered was hiking up Mount Fitzroy, a few hours away from El Calafate. However, since the weather predictions weren't looking too ... read more

After covering over 12,000 km driving in the RV, making our way to Uruguay and exploring Colonia, Cabo Polonia, Punta de Diablo and the whole east coast of Uruguay arriving in Punta del Este was a wonderful break. Believe it or not this can take a toll on you. We are all needing a break from our transient life style as well as each other. We rented a one bedroom apt. through airbnb which has proven to he a helpful website on our travels. Max and Liv shared the bedroom with 2 single beds while Sean and I slept in luxury. I on a single daybed and Sean on the single trundle mattress that pulls out from under the daybed! Montevideo, Uruguay and Colonia del Sacramento…..Oh My Gosh! Today was one of the biggest surprises of the trip so far. We had no idea what a fabulous place Uruguay is. Prior to this we never gave Uruguay a thought except as a word with 3 U’s for Scrabble if we stretch the rules to use nouns ;-) Uruguay gained its independence from Portugal and Spain, July 11, 1830. The national elections, held every 5 years, were held just last November, and the new President is to be sworn in next week. They are getting downtown Montevideo ready for the inaugural events. We learned so much today-Uruguay has relatively low unemployment, crime rates and inflation, and the economy is growing under a stable economic and political system. This is in big contrast to what we heard in ... read more

What an exceptional day we have had! This place is so lovely! Docked at 9,00a.m. our guide Fabian was waiting for us at the port, we had booked with him before we left Australia, private tour just the two of us, tour included the old city, to a boutique winery, the newer city, beaches and back to the port market which is full of BBQ places. Uruguayans very proud of their country, 3.4 million people and 1.4 of them in Montevideo , Fabian born and bred in Uruguay but Italian descent, 90 percent of Uruguay is Italian and Spanish, such lovely people. First to the old city, all the sites and then Fabian took us to the local market, which I love going to these sort of places where the locals shop, bought some wine, had ... read more

Well here I sit in Villa Maria / Argentina and it is absolutely pissing down. Heavens just opened up this morning and the gods just used buckets to deliver the wet stuff to the planet. I have been lucky over the last few months regarding the weather so I am not complaining. And what does one do when it rains and nothing else can be done? Update the travel blog of course…… So let’s get started with my trip to Montevideo in Uruguay. After Carla and I had a fantastic time in the south of Brazil, visiting some awesome places and I personally learned a lot about this part of the world, it was time to go back to Porto Alegre. Carla had a plane to catch to return to Brasilia since she had some prior ... read more

It's 7km to get into the quaint village of Cabo Polonia, and the only way in is through these huge 4 wheel trucks....check out the video (super fun) What a fabulous place to explore for an afternoon and have lunch. South America » Uruguay » East » Punta del Diablo February 16th 2015

Punta del Diablo is a small fishing/surfing village on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay just 40km from the Brazilian border. We spent much of our days chillin and surfin! Heavennnnnn Surfing was extremely fun, the kids were so pumped to do it no second thoughts just GO ......me not so much a little nervous of the big waves and well (my thoughts briefly wandered to Jaws/SoulSurfer :) ridiculous I know that's just my fear talkin. Sean was our videographer and caught us all in action.....while he rented a board later. Once I started I never looked back! The kids were naturals and good old mom did pretty good too. Driving into Punta del Diablo we didn't realize that there was a National Holiday (Carnival)......duuuuu as we are in holiday mode always:) We certainly learned our lesson..... ... read more
