C: After our time in BA we decided to head across the water into Uruguay, not just for another passport stamp, but to visit the pretty coastal town of Colonia del Sacramento. It's only takes a couple of hours on the ferry from BA across the interestingly named River Plate which apparently, according to the history lesson my dad gave us via Skype, was the site of a major naval battle during WWII. Despite Argentinian and Uruguayan customs nearly causing us to want to start another battle, we made it across. (R: The popcorn lives on!). The town itself lives up to the hype. Set on a pretty peninsula and full of cobbled streets and attractive little buildings it was a nice place just to wander and soak up the atmosphere. It is smarter than BA, ... read more

We arrived to glorious blue sky sailing up the River Plate this morning. Very classy city centre. The language is Spanish now. Big cafe culture, nice shops. Lovely river beaches stretching for miles. Lots of culture..music and theatre as. Only has population of 3 million. Half live in the city. We survived pancake races on board for Shrove Tuesday and have had a lot of fun. We both looked at each other on day and agreed despite having colds and drinking only water, life could not get better than this. Love to all... read more

Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568Montevideo (capital of Uruguay) today - it was hot early and when we woke up the ship was already docked. From the harbour it looked very built up and industrial, and is obviously a very busy port - there was lots to watch - all sorts of ships coming and going, loads of stacked containers waiting to be loaded on the quayside and our ship had offloaded its rubbish which was being transferred to skip by forklift and new supplies were coming onboard. We ventured out of the dock on our own for a walk about an hour before our organised tour was due to begin. Montevideo has a typical city feel, bustling, lots of traffic and many different nationalities. There are lots of old stone buildings and the streets are laid out in ... read more

Thursday January 28th, 2016. Montevideo, Uruguay Montevideo is Uruguay's capital and largest city lying on Montevideo Bay on the east bank of the Río de la Plata (River Plate). Although in English it is translated as River Plate the Río de la Plata actually means River of Silver. It is not a river at all but a wide estuary created by two rivers which empty into it. Montevideo is the southernmost capital city in South America. The river separates the south coast of Uruguay from the north coast of Argentina. The city stretches approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) from east to west and boasts an industrial port and an exclusive beach-side suburb. The city has a mild humid subtropical climate. During the winter (June to September), the city is cool with hot summers from December to ... read more

Geo: -34.9751, -54.943Queued for our tender ticket (no sticker required today) - with no shore excursion booked we hopped on the tender armed with sun cream and our books. It was hot at 9am. Ten minutes to shore. We collected a walking tour map (a 2 hour tour taking in 11 points of interest) from the tourist information office at the end of the disembarkation pier and set off for the first point of interest. Our fist impression of Punta de Este was what a beautiful place it was. Clean, golden sandy beaches, a marina with nice boats, expensive, well kept houses and holiday lets along the seafront, hundreds of palm trees and a generally good vibe - unlike the residential areas of Puerto Madryn, Argentina, the houses weren't gated which suggested that crime is low. ... read more

Last week, we went on our first 'side trip' and visited Colonia, a UNESCO world heritage site, Montevideo and Punta del Este in Uruguay. I have to admit, I didn't know a lot about Argentina's tiny neighbour, but we do now. For instance, did you know that: - Uruguay is 4 times as big as The Netherlands - Uruguay has 3 million inhabitants and 12 million cows - After the economic crisis in 2002, 25% of all Uruguayans (1 million) moved to live outside of Uruguay - Uruguay has the largest consumption of whiskey outside of Ireland and Scotland - In 2013, soft drugs, gay marriage and abortion were legalised in Uruguay, all in the same year - Uruguayans love tourists - they wonder why anyone would want to visit their country... We actually did have ... read more
