As of yesterday, I can officially say I’ve been to Uruguay! I went with ISA on a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, a tiny city on the coast that’s only a three hour ferry ride away from Buenos Aires. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site back in the 1990s. The whole city is full of quaint architecture and cobblestone streets—a refreshing change from life in the big city. There are a lot of shops run by local artisans (and a lot of tourist trap shops as well), so the main thing we did was eat and shop. Greatings from the 3rd country of my trip - Uruguay! 3 countries in less then 3 weeks not bad eh? Unfortunately I don't think im going to see much more of Uruguay then the town that im currently in, Colonia, as tomorrow I head back to BA for a 3rd, though probably not last, time. I arrived back in BA on Sunday and headed back to my traditional stomping ground at the Hostel Estoril. (Have you stayed too long when the staff know your name?) I bumped into a few old faces and several new ones so had a few drinks whilst watching the football (again). We decided to spend an afternoon in Uruguay... we need more visa stamps in our passport and we wanted to get 2 extra stamps. We took the express ferry to a colonian town called Colonia del Sacramento. It was defnitely worth the trip. The historical part has been preserved intact since the colonial era. The district has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. We had some problems with the ferry company on our way back and had to argue to get our ticket (even if we had already paid). They made a mistake in their system and apprently we had already taked the ferry back to Buenos Aires a few hours before. (maybe they thought we decided to swim back to Colonia...!) The bus from Montevideo to Colonia del Sacremento was fairly uneventful. We both slept our way through it. It was a civilised 3 hour journey on a comfortable bus passing through green fields and countryside. It was good to see greenery again after the constant desert and dusty villages of northern Chile and Peru, which can start to look quite drab. The bus terminal at Colonia was small and efficient, and just a short walk from the centre. In fact, Colonia is pretty small and everything is a short walk away. Firstly, we had to find somewhere to stay.
