This next segment of the cruise was a busy one. We went to 10 ports in 11 days. It is hard to study up on each one when the ports are back to back. But we would do our best. The ship is full as about 490 new passengers boarded in Buenos Aires. It takes a while for everyone to get settled in. We see newbies at the stern of the ship when they are trying to get to the Observation Lounge at the bow and vice versa or wandering up and down the hallways looking for their stateroom. It’s the joy of discovery. After another nice day in Montevideo we cruised up to the resort town of Punta Del Este. This is the vacation escape place for wealthy Argentinians and Uruguayans. It was the first ... read more

1-21-12 SaturdayThe ride to La Pedrera was long and flat… quite literally. There are very few hills in Uruguay, especially in the south. As you ride along the highway, (a two lane road with a few stop signs) you can see as far as the eyes can wander. There are small “hills” in the distance that look as though they could be comparable to Connecticut's own, but our mind must have played tricks on us for the reality is they are very close and very small. Randomly speckled along the highway are fields filled with antique cars. through my eyes it seems as though the cars outlive the people here. It isn’t odd to see multiple vintage VW buses and bugs drive down the street, along with old ford trucks and tons of fiats older than ... read more

Chao Buenos Aires, bienvenido Uruguay! Checked out of our apartment in the early morning, and after a harrowing taxi run, caught our BusqueBus ferry to Colonia. Heard this place is pretty amazing, but we were already heading to Punta del Este by bus. Although pretty tired, we passed along some gorgeous countryside, with vast green fields, eucalyptus and pine trees, and quaint villages using horse and trailer carriage to get around. Dosing in and out, we made it to Punta del Este by early afternoon. As we approached the city, I noticed some of the pijo qualities we were bound to encounter. All the billboards had ads promoting beautiful people, high class accomodations, and other ritzy elements. Ballers on a budget, we knew we could make it work... On arrival, equipped with an address and minimal ... read more

Hello from Punta del Este in Uruguay! Have just finished a day of beaches and walking around this resort town, although we were told we would see ferraris on the streets here the best we have seen is a porsch, and even that was a 4WD. This seems to be the richest place in Uruguay and very different from Montevideo. For lunch we went to the port here and ordered fresh seafood in the market and had it cooked up on the spot. Unfortunately did not do currency conversions well and failed to realise it was about $100 US for our lunch, not bad overall, but up there for south american prices. Also saw a sea lion fend off two street dogs and an intruiging battle - we were on the sea lions side. before montevideo ... read more

I spent this past weekend in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay, a sleepy beach town close to the Brazillian border. I had planned on leaving last Tuesday and getting back on Monday to spend a night in Montevideo...but the tickets sold out and I would have had to end up going by myself. I left on Friday morning with Susana, Thy and Heather, which was nice becasue I had the rest of the week to work on homework and get a few things done. I called a remise to take us to the ColoniaExpress port in La Boca because our boat left at 8am and we still needed to check-in. We could have take the bus but we just wanted to make sure that we got there on time and didn't miss our boat because Susana got ... read more

After leaving our hostel in Buenos Aires we headed for the port to catch our ferry. Luckily we left plenty of time because we showed up to the wrong one to begin with. Some minor problems later and our voyage to Uruguay had begun. Our first stop was Colonia where, impressed by its laid back feel, we intended to rest and spend the following day enjoying the sights. However a shortage of beds and a glut of other tourists meant that we ended up traveling on to Montevideo a day earlier than expected. During our short stop in Montevideo we went to have a look at the plazas and buildings of the Ciudad Vieja (old city). Unfortunately we didn’t find all that much to hold our interest and soon travelled onwards to Punta del Diablo on ... read more

it's been a few days, but we are now well into our trip to south america. it was quite the long haul, starting in pittsburgh, and road tripping it down to d.c. to catch our flight. from here, we hit el salvador, peru, and finally arrived here in uruguay on sunday. uruguay was the place in our trip where we really had no plans, and no expectations. we hoped for nice weather and a little warmth, but really nothing else. thankfully for us, our expectations have been blown away! we arrived in montevideo at the carrasco airport, grabbed our bags after grabbing loads of duty free bebidas, and searched out europcar. keeping in mind we arrived around 5:30 in the morning, we had no idea how long we'd have to wait for them to open. luckily, ... read more

Date? Ive forgotten, its been so long since we wrote anything!! So here's the catch up: On Tuesday we caught a bus to Punte del este, about 2 hrs from Montevideo. Its a beautiful, affluent beach side town, that pretty much closes down during the off season- and they can afford to as there is soooo much money here in the high season. The amount of construction going on is phenominal. The locals are quite resentful of this as all of the buildings, apartments and land are being bought up by wealthy Argentinians and Brazilians. The Homes and apartments are really reasonably priced here when you compare them to Australian prices, so you cant blame the investors for wanting a piece of a great pie. Stayed at a great hostel called El Viajero-same chain as in ... read more

I didn't know very much about Uruguay before we arrived here a couple of days ago. The country has a funny name. Its capital is Montevideo. There's lots of cows there. And that's just about it - truthfully! I don't think it's just me, though. With the exception of Uruguayans and perhaps of porteños across the River Plate, it seems that Uruguay is well below most people's radar. Our guide to Argentina "also includes Uruguay" - the country reduced almost to a footnote. If I were Uruguay I'd be a bit annoyed. Most visitors to the region, it would seem, leave this little country - little by South American standards, of course, since it's a fair bit larger than England and Wales combined - off their itineraries. Reason enough for us to pay a visit, then! ... read more

Hello everyone to our new blog on our world-tour! First chapter is about our start in Uruguay! After ridiculous long flights (20 and 30 hours) we finally made it to Montevideo, met Melanie and Matthias who rented us their Mitsubishi L300 in Piriapolis! Equipped with a ride we drove up north and spent the first night in La Pedrera camping on a parking lot. Unfortunately the police was not so happy about that and woke us up at 23:30 ;-)! next day we drove to San Teresa National Park where we stayed two days and had a pretty good surf! Met the friendliest Spanish speaking locals on the whole world! In the weekend we tried to catch a ferry to Buenos Aires which took us one day which we stayed in Colonia a pretty nice town ... read more
