No Uruguay visit is complete without having seen Punta del Este – well at least, so I have been told by many people… so last weekend I finally headed this direction full of expectations. Punta del Este is known for it's beaches, yachts, beautiful people and a vibrant night scene. It is expensive, usually about 50% more expensive than other areas of Uruguay, if not more. It's been called the Monaco of South America. Tourist season varies from totally deserted in the winter to very very crowded in the summer, unusual for a city this size. So since we are in the middle of autumn over here - I did not find this exciting resort, but instead I found a laid back and mundane beach side town. I was very lucky with the weather including a ... read more

This time we drove all the way to Punta Del Diablo which is close to the Brazilian border and about 300 km away from Montevideo. Apparently the Lonely Planet ranked Punta del Diablo among the top 10 cities to visit in 2008, well we have ticked that one off ... The small and sleepy fisher village is perched on a gentle rise overlooking the ocean with lots of brightly colored buildings, including few shops, restaurants, bars and grocery stores. Due to strict building restrictions, there are no high rises or luxury resorts. Instead there are small hotels, a hostel, cabanas and vacation houses. The high season for tourism runs from December to Easter week. During high season, the population of the small fishing village of approximately 400 people grows to approximately 25´000! Even though most of ... read more

An "Australian Surf Instructor" in Uruguay. Something I never thought I would do/be/become... This is going to be a good conversation starter when I start going for job interviews in Australia again. So the summer in Punta del Este has come to an end and therefore so has my work as a surf instructor. I decided to keep a small diary of my experience over the time, giving you the following as a little summary and extract of some of the thoughts, feelings & struggles I faced whilst teaching surf over the past 6 weeks. Never-the-less, it was a fun experience and will be interesting to elaborate on in an interview some day! WEEK #1 Challenges faced: the constant feeling of jet-lag whilst trying to bring my body clock back into sync with daylight hours. Emotionally ... read more

Sometimes you've got to experience everything going wrong to get to where you want to be. Today, that has to be my motto. Ok so my Spanish is a little poor, but I do think I speak and understand enough to get to where I need to be - except for the fact that no one knows where the hell I'm going and want to send me in the opposite direction! *this could be a good motivational life quote if anyone wants to turn it into one of those 'Pintrest' thingies. So Uruguay. After 1 month here I think I realise what I'm here for. This feels like the place where I put all my lessons learnt to the test - and so far, ... read more

Back in Asia we heard that South America is a great place for CouchSurfers. We did not participate much in CS in Asia but decided to give it a go in here. We already stayed with Leandro in Buenos and now came the time to try some of the Uruguayan hospitality. We took a bus from Montevideo to Maldonado (100UR$/10$ each) near Punta Del Este to meet our hosts – Lau and Max. We could not believe how high the standard of Uruguayan buses was. Not only they have brand new flotas but also all of them have Wi-Fi on board. Shame on you, bus companies in Europe!!! We got there around 8 pm and were a little bit skeptical about walking 8 blocks to the main plaza with all of our stuff. As we learnt ... read more

The bus pulled into Punta del Diablo just on dark. As we collected our luggage a lady asked us where we were going. When we told her, she chuckled and she said it was on her way so she would give us a lift. This turned out to be a blessing because the hostel was some distance from the bus stop over dirt roads with very few street signs. We had not made a booking so we sighed with relief when the young woman at reception confirmed she could offer us a room. The Hostel offered evening meals so we decided the “chicken wok” for NZ$12 each was a good option rather than wandering in the dark to find food. It was good value not only because of the price but also because watching the young ... read more

We arrived by bus at Rocha at 10:40 am, a little ahead of the scheduled 11 am arrival time. We settled into an adjacent café for a coffee and a hot chocolate and we watched the locals trying to keep out of the rain while we waited for our hosts. Lucie arrived after the bus but before the scheduled arrival time. In order to see the bus arrive and to keep dry, she parked her ute on the opposite side of the main square where she had a good view of the bus stop. At about 11:30 she decided to leave the comfort of her vehicle to inquire about the "late" bus. Meanwhile, Eileen spotted the slim, fair skinned woman with a big mop of dreadlocks crossing the road and so Eileen dashed out to ask ... read more

It had been over three months since we had felt sand between our toes and could cool off by dipping into the sea, and so we decided it was time to once again hit the beach. Now that we were in Uruguay, we knew that there were plenty of places we could go up the coast, and that the weather would still be fairly warm wherever we went, however the place that we really liked the sound of was Punta Del Diablo (Devils Point) We were drawn to this South American beach town for several reasons really; the promise of a laid back surfer town, no high-rise hotels, no ‘Mega clubs’ and a fantastic beach to boot. Plus, in case we needed persuading any more, our friends Troy and Kylie also happened to be visiting here ... read more
