Though similar in name to Punta del Este, Punta del Diablo simply couldn't be more different. In the place of highrise apartment buildings were shacks and cabins, in the place of paved and guttered roads were sand and dirt tracks, and in the place of swanky boutiques were, well, nothing. If it wasn't for the group of Americans I hooked up with at the bus stop and lodged with, I wouldn't have had anyone to hang around with other than a few mangy stray dogs. Though we were never planning on a lengthy stay in town, we changed accomodation after the first night - the frozen skinned hare in the freezer didn't exactly endear the first place to us so much. I only spent 2 days/nights in town as the Americans were leaving on the ... read more

After Ben arrived in Argentina we spent a few days in buenos aires and then decided to get out of the city hussle. We caught the Ferry over to Uruguay and then a bus to a little fishing town right near the border of brazil. We found ourselves in a small chilled out beach town with all dirt roads and little cottages right on the beach. We walked around for a bit knocking on doors asking about accomadation finally Ben and krissy came through with the goods. The most amazing little A frame house right on the rocks about 30 meters to the water. The best thing was that this treasure was costing us about $5 Aussie dollars a night each!!! The veiw from our window was amazing. Krissy hung her hammock right at the ... read more

After the hustle and bustle of the big city, the one-hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacremento in the south of Uruguay left me with a profound feeling of peace. I wasn´t worried about my bag or my passport or getting pickpocketed. The biggest concern was finding something to keep myself busy in the quiet town. I spent two nights in Colonia, walking the stone streets, riding a bike from the hostel to the beach and drinking wine in the hostel. Colonia is tiny and touristy but cute as hell and was a welcome change from two weeks in the big city. I booked into a cheap hostel that I ended up loving for the hammocks and many friendly travelers. I have found here that I meet many more people in the small ... read more

¡¡¡Hola!!! If there is any blog that is going to be the most...interesting....of the blogs from my travels in South America, it is going to be this one! So get excited and read on: Okay, last I left off I was still in Buenos Aires and had just gotten back from a tango show where Ashley had fallen asleep at the show :) That night Matt had to leave us so the next day it was just Ashley and me on our own. We ended up spending most of the day with this guy named Jay from Florida, so that was fun. We got back from going to Palermo (a neighborhood of Buenos Aires) around 7:30 at night. Well, Jay's friends that he was traveling with were leaving at 8 that night to catch a bus ... read more

If i had to pick one place so far that I miss the most. This would be it. I loved it here. We arrived in the afternoon, and once we stepped off that bus - man - i was in love! We saw all these signs for cabañas for rent, so we were pretty interested in doing that. We met a girl on the bus who we had seen at our hostel in Iguazu, and she was in .. and then there were these two guys who got off our same bus - so we asked them if they would like to share a cabaña with us aswell..the more the merrier (and cheaper!). We took a little walk down towards the beach, knowcking on doors, and asking around. And then we found it. Our little home ... read more

Once again, apologies for the lackage of entries on the blog! As much as we absolutely LOVED Uruguay, I can´t say that the internet was fast, reliable, or even available... and if it were any of the above, we were having way too much fun to want to sit down in a dark cafe and type away! The week that we spent wandering around the tiny tucked away country on the east coast of South America was nothing short of magnificent! The people were incredibly friendly; always stopping for a chat about anything and nothing, willing to give extensive directions and smiling from ear to ear when they learned that I spoke ¨Castellano¨ (aka, Spanish). I guess they´re used to doing the sign language and over-energetic gesturing to try and get their point across... sometimes easier ... read more

Greetings from Uruguay! Considering we had never planned to come to this country it could well be my favourite so far! It´s just as developed, sophisticated and cheap as Argentina but the people are so much warmer and more friendly! We crossed the border from Argentina to a town in the North called Salto. It was a really nice small town with plenty of shops, restaurants and plazas to keep us occupied for a day! I even managed to buy a pair of Quicksilver board shorts a lot cheaper than I could in Oz! The next day we visited the town´s main attraction, it´s thermal springs. We went to a complex of ten pools of varying temperatures, the hottest being 46 degrees. I know it sounds great but when it´s 30 degrees outside, sitting in even ... read more

My last entry I had just arrived in Bariloche. Bariloche is what i would call the main hub for travelers setting out to Patagonia. It is a beautiful little town set around a large lake and surrounded by breathtaking snow capped mountains. With all the mountains and lakes in the area it's a haven for trekking enthusiasts. Myself along with Jim and his girlfriend Jynx hiked some of the near by mountains and apart from the cold winds coming off the lakes I enjoyed it but I was finding that I just wasn't that impressed. I had followed the Andes mountains nearly their entire length and I think by then it was a bit of over kill. With my Patagonian adventure just beginning I was forced to make some heavy decisions. Continue south through Patagonia ... read more
