Yesterday, Sunday 21st December, we took a tour to visit a couple of islands on Lake Titicaca. It was a beautiful sunny day with not a drop of rain, despite being the rainy season now, and the lake was almost as blue as the Mediterranean. An American girl on our tour said that it looked so like the Med, she wanted to jump in, but of course, it is severely freezing cold, so didn´t! Very wise! The Uros people of Lake Titicaca have been building and living on floating reed islands for centuries. Originally driven from terra firma by Quechua tribes, they lived for many years on boats made from reeds and then progressed to building islands and houses as well as boats from the reeds of the lakes. The roots of the reeds ... read more

We woke up today to watch the sunrise on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Our hotel, Sonesta Posada Del Inca Puno, is situated on the shore of Lake Titicaca, South America's highest and largest navigable lake. The breakfast, despite the pretty views, was abysmal. I barely ate. Today was dedicated to a boat journey through Lake Titicaca. We said a goodbye to Dagmar, our tour guide through the Cusco region, last night and hello to Charo, our guide in Puno this morning. Charo is very engaging, funny, and knowledgeable about this area and the unique culture found here. I grabbed a seat at the front of the boat with a nice big open window where the lake breeze could blow in. Lake Titicaca has brackish water which gives the breeze a slightly salty tang. Our boat ... read more

Hey! As most of you know, I am back home again, but want to continue the blov until I finish telling you about the rest of my trip! So, keep on keepin on and stay tuned! :) I left the last blov leaving you with my first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Like I said, I've seen it in hundreds of pictures.. so when you see it in real life, you're like "Whoa! It really looks like that", which I know sounds dumb, but it's really true. I still don't know what Machu Picchu is, or was for, and I know I could use the google machine to get all kinds of answers, but really, I kind of like the complete uncertainty. I'm not certain anyone really knows. The site itself was a lot bigger than I ... read more

We finally left La Paz and headed to Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca. In Copacabana we walked past the cathedral and saw a religious procession where they make pretty designs on the ground using petals for the procession to travel over. Later in the day we bumped into some friends from Sucre so spent the afternoon watching the football world cup (a recurring theme) with them. Just before sunset we walked up cerro Calvario for great views over Copacabana and Lake Titicaca. The next morning we were up early to catch a boat to Isla de Sol (Sun Island). We bumped into another couple of friends from the ride and river trip in the line for the boat so spent the day with them. The boat ride was a couple of hours each way, ... read more

Lake Titicaca- funny name right? however in the indigenous language it means Puma which if you look at an ariel picture of the lake it is in the shape of a puma eating a rabbit. How do people see these things? Pumas condors and snakes played an important part of the pre Inca religions many moons ago and it is represented in the art textiles and buildings in many of the things we saw here . First we boated to the reed islands- islands made entirely of reeds. First they layered more reeds on top of the roots of the live reeds and it made it strong enough to builds homes and fires for cooking. Walking on it was a weird experience soft spongy and a overwhelming feeling of being tangled up in it. These civilizations ... read more

We arrived in Cusco the night before after an incredibly full day, in heart, mind and body. Aba took us out for supper and we repacked for the move to Puno. Bed came late. In the morning, we waited for our ride to the tour bus, but it didn't come. With a bit of confusion and rearrangements we still made a bus. The bus took us to a number of archaeological and religious sites on the way to Puno. As you move along the mountain range south, the landscape changes again. Here, the mountains get dryer, the grasses coarse, and grain and llama are king. Alpaca and Llama interspersed with cattle and sheep are everywhere. They are cobbled, or hemmed in by rock walls stacked without mortar or mud. The roadside markets become filled with alpaca ... read more

My last stop in Peru - Puno! Not the most beautiful cities but I wasn´t here to see the city, I was here to see Lake Titikaka. I travelled from Cusco to Puno on the overnight bus the very same day that I trekked Machu Picchu and woke up with very stiff legs! I arrived at my hostel around 5am and didn´t get my room until 10am! Safe to say, I was extremely tired that day and was not in the mood to do anything strenuous! I talked with some people staying in my hostel and they had told me they had booked at 2day/1 night tour to the island on Lake Titikaka through the hostel. It seemed good so I decided to book, leaving at 730 the next morning. When am I going to get ... read more

Hello followers! How's it all going in the sunburnt country these days? Sorry that it has taken a while for me to bring you all up to date. Very hard to catch up a week when everything is still busy. Really want to thank you for reading my blogs too :)! It is great to see the stats and know that I won't have to repeat myself a 100 times when I get home LOL! But seriously, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you are on this journey with me - from kids, to relatives, friends, teamies, workmates & I guess the occasional boss too! So let's get down to the business of telling you all about the Puno region. Ummm... Puno the city itself is nothing really amazing. It has a slightly ... read more

5-7 May 2014 Monday through Wednesday. We were again faced with another early start of a day...5:40 am with a rendezvous with the luxury bus that would he take us to Puno on Lake Titicaca departing at 7:20 am. Our tour agent used Wonder bus, a competitor to the Inca Express. We would have five stops along the way, arriving in Puno about 5 pm. The first was the town of Andahuaylillas where the interior of the 17th century church is compared to the Sistine Chapel, with paintings of the Last Judgement and extensive wall decorations. While interesting and different, I've seen the Sistine Chapel and this is no Sistine Chapel. Next we stopped in Raqchi at the Inca ruins known as the Temple of God Wiracocha, who was the supreme god. This city was on ... read more

Days 56 -57 we had a fun start to the day when our group left our hotel in a convoy of 2 man peddle powered cyclos for a quick trip down to the port for our tour of Lake Titicaca. We were joined by our guide, John, who is an expert in the history & culture for these regional communities. We started out by slow motor boat in dead calm & warm conditions although the water temperature is a constant cold 9-10 deg. After a short cruise our first stop off was to visit the Uros floating islands. The Uros natives originally moved north to Puno thousands of years ago & were happily settled there until the Spanish arrived & who needed a constant supply of slave labour to mine the rich lodes of silver that ... read more
