We finished Macchu Pichu (which I will write about after I have finished the blog) and then moved on to Lima. We had a rather eventful journey when after three hours on the bus the policia boarded only to tell us we had to turn around and go back to Cuzco. It turned out that our driver had been involved in an accident earlier that day and was currently driving drunk. The bus was full of Israelis so you can only imagine the commotion when our full cama bus was taken to the bus station and our replacement bus was…semi cama! Personally I didn’t care that much but an army of 6 Israelis were bent on making themselves heard when they crowded around the Peruvian police shouting (in English). Surprise surprise their protest came to nothing ... read more

Time for some warmer weather and the beaches. We high-tailed it from the Andes, via a 7 hr stop in Lima to Trujillo, Peru. After arriving at 6am in the morning we decided to split a cab with a yound American fellow to the beachside town of Huanchaco. Cabbie picked a great hotel for us (balcony, big room, cable TV) and we negotiated price down to 30Soles ($11AUD) a night, given we would stay for a few nights. Bargain. Huanchaco is a Peruvian holiday spot and is well know for its good surf and caballitos de torta (Reed boats). Being the off season it was quiet. Surprisingly quiet actually. Which was good for us. Although most restaurants were closed so finding eating and drinking spots wasnt that easy. There were plenty of hippies selling there wares ... read more

Hola Amigos! This is going to be a short one because there is not so many ways to say that all we did was RELAX in this next destination. After Lima, Greg and I took a 17 hour bus to Mancora, Peru. Mancora is in northern Peru right on the coast and is a renowned surf and kite boarding spot. We picked a pricier hostel for a first night as a splurge, but turns out this hostel is now under new management, and it wasn't the 'splurge' we were looking for. So we switched hostels and spent the next four nights at the well known party joint, Loki Hostel. This hostel looked more like a resort than a hostel, right on the ocean, with a pool and nice rooms with balconys. Our main objective for Mancora ... read more

Hola mis amigos! From Huanchaco, which I was sad to leave behind, we headed further up the coast to Máncora, a little surfing party town close to the border with Ecuador. We took an overnight bus there, which would have been fine had it not been for the grade A snorer sitting behind me on the bus. Still, it is far nicer travelling on those long buses with friends than on your own, so I would rather be on the bus with some travel buddies and The Snore King than by myself on a peaceful one! We arrived early in the morning, hopped into a couple of mototaxis (like a motorised rickshaw) which took us to a few, equally bad, B&Bs. One advertised an "open water feature" which was essentially a stagnant pool right outside the ... read more

Hola! 11/3/10 Not much done today apart from walking around and taking in the sights of Cusco, although we do discover a cracking all day English breakfast in an Irish bar called Paddy´s (supposedly the highest Irish bar in the world). 12/3/10 Today is our first day of visiting the Incas ruins. We visit places called Tambomachay, Q´enqo and my personal favourite, Saqsaywaman - where there is a disappointing dearth of good-looking ladies. Dave´s attempts at Spanish are hilarious. The other day he referred to our waitress as the Islamic-sounding ´Sunita´ as opposed to ´Senyorita´. Today, a lot of us want to do the Saqsaywaman tour in a rush because it´s raining, so Dave asks our Spanish-speaking guide, ´Amigo, can we do the... umm... vamos tour of the ruins please.´ We all knew what he meant. ... read more

I arrived in Mancora at 9.15am on Tuesday 9 February after my 27 hour journey from Nazca. The hotel that I reserved would not allow me to check in early so I walked around and found a decent room somewhere else for a fifth of the price. It was only 20 seconds from the beach and I could check in straight away and have a shower. Then I went for a walk along the beach and headed back to my room along the main road. The afternoon was spent in my room watching football and then on the roof terrace of the hotel reading my book and catching some very strong sun (even at 6pm). After a shower I went for a nice steak dinner and a cool refreshing beer before retiring to my room for ... read more

Its 2010 and a lot has happened since my last entry, First off Happy New Year, I wish anyone who may be reading a healthy and safe one. Well we ended up staying over Christmas and New Years thanks to the kindness of some new and now dear friends but I will get to that in a minute. The massive, promised waves were delivered in spectacular fashion, I know nothing about surf but it was obvious they were huge, Somewhat proven on the first day when we watched an unlucky surfer emerge from the waves with a piece of his surf board in each hand, poor lad. Just watching these lads and lassies was amazing, again the break was so close to the beach and the full moon made for massive tides that came right up ... read more

Dec 21 - Peru - Puira - Beach Life - Well its official - we have now been to possible one of the most remote beaches I have ever been to. The girls were itching to see the sun so we embarked on an adventure to make it from Puira on a local bus to Puerta which is kinda a shanty town (dodge/sad) and then in a combino taxi to the beach (20min drive). Not speaking very much spanish we made it. - The taxi was accross a desert / rubbish land fill haha and then down through some pretty amazing cliff type roads to the beach. Really remote and really hot. Alice has officially industrial strength skin to cope with the sun. Dani and I have more ´home brand´ type skin haha - Lobster anyone. ... read more
