Well, yesterday we started our trip for real. After a quick wander round Piura for some brekkie and a money stop, we hopped on a bus to Máncora - a beach in the middle of the desert! Consequently is pretty hot..and looks like a scene from "The Hills Have Eyes" - one of the many qualitly films me and Kat have seen on buses since being in South America. Still, wasnt quite as good as "Dogs of the Devil..3!!" which was a piece of cinematic genius..ahem.. Anyway, Had a lovely S/. 10 dinner and tried Cristal - the national beer of Perú! Got to be done..! Off for an early night after that! On our second day we..well sunbathed! We had planned to surf, but the rocks didnt look to friendly so we gave up ... read more

So our first day off travelling started..well less than successfully! Had a hellish start of 4.30am wake up call in order to catch the first bus of the morning from Vilcabamba to Loja..unfortunatley as we were in Ecuador, suprisingly enough this didn't turn up until 5.50am..leaving us just enough time to make the 7am but to Piura..unfortuntely we werent that lucky and as we were going into the terminal, our lovely bus passed us going out. Damn. Unfortunatley this then meant a six hour wait in Loja bus terminal in order to get the 1pm bus. After going for a chicken and rice breakfast, playing chess magnetically, admiring the man and his cockeral and then making friendship bracelts - much to the amusement of the locals, the time passed reletively rapidly and we got safely onto ... read more

After having to say goodbye to our family, all our friends as well as the kids at Adinea and the orphanage in Cuenca we were both officially emotional wrecks so took a couple of days in Vilcabamba to relax. Had a hellish start today with a 4.30am wake up call in order to catch the first bus of the morning from Vilcabamba to Loja. Unfortunatley this didn't turn up until 5.50am which meant we drove into Loja just as our 7am bus to Piura, Peru drove out. You would think buses would go regularly but no. Missing this one meant a six hour wait in Loja bus terminal in order to get the 1pm bus. Believe me, bus terminals are not nicest places to wait and we got a lot of weird looks for sitting ... read more

Hola Well I am in Mancora now and finally found some nice weather... But before Mancora I was in Huanchaco, which is a little town outside Trujillo along the coast. It is primarily a surfing town, but its the off season so 50 percent of the buildings were closed, the sky was also grey like Lima and the weather wasnt warm, and the streets were deserted, so I stayed for a day and set off to Mancora. After a 9 hour bumpy, cramped ride on the dirty bus, where a older man across the aisle from me would periodically clear his throat and spit all over the floor of the bus for some reason, nice. Anyways, Mancora, no more grey sky, hot weather and nice beaches. Not much to do here other than sit in the ... read more

well... we managed to cross the border safely at Huaquillas. Luckily we were able to travel most of the day...I must say there was a lot going outside my window...It would have been great to stop off some of the towns...lots of bannana plantations...it took me a while to realize why the bananas were covered with what appeared to be a blue think layer of plastic (open at the bottom end)...later I saw a plane spraying pesticide over the plantations... a place where people also had their houses...a place where their children played and families gathered. throughout the ride I saw these blue plastic bags on the side of the road... we have spent two nights here in Mancora, a great beach town. Dan and I went shopping at the local grocery market and got ... read more

Our last stop in Peru was a small coastal town called Mancora where we spent 5 days lying on the beach. The weather was nice everyday and got to about 30 degrees. Here both surfing and kite-surfing are really popular.

With our last night bus journey finally over (Hurray!!) we arrived in Mancora bright and early (6.00am) and lwere iterally thrown off the bus straight in to the hands of a baying mob of tuk-tuk drivers! After holding them off for a while we were finally approached by an unusually polite and patient "tukkie" who took it upon himself to make a number of recommendations as to where we should stay. However, Suzz had seen a place on the internet which looked pretty nice so we decided to take try here first. However, on arrival it seemed a bit pricey so we decided to take the "tukkie's" advice and off we chugged to another place which was way, way out of town. In the end we went back to the first one, Buena Vista apartments, ... read more
