It was April 2017 and time to get off Curaçao again! This time I went with Jurick, one of my best friends who I grew up with in my neighbourhood. In January I saw this particular travel agency having a special price on tickets to Perú, only valid for that one day and you had to go personally to book and pay immediately. We couldn't let this chance go, so I went immediately there after work. Even though I had to wait long, I didn't care. While waiting for my turn at the travel agency, I took advantage to do some correction work for school. And then the flights were booked and paid for! It was the first time I travelled with Jurick. I arranged everything (hostels, flights, itinerary etc) and he just had to give ... read more

Lima (3/6/2018 - 5/6/2018) From beautiful snow-capped mountains to the busy city *sniff*. Not really a city girl myself, my time here was short and sweet. Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru; and lies on the country's arid Pacific coast. My favourite activity here was a visit to MATE (pronounced mAH-teh): the Mario Testino photography museum. It was also free because it was a Sunday, jackpot! Peruvian born but living in the England for many years, Mario Testino has been a fashion photographer for the past 20 years. MATE was founded in 2012 and is located in the hipster area of Lima, Barranco. As well as celebrity photography, Mario seeks to portray his Peruvian culture through his gorgeous, bright and glossy photography. One exhibition featured large images of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, ... read more

Once again the cock crowed at 4:30 Am for our 5:30 departure. Today we bid farewell to Puno and prepare to return to Lima. Our flight departed out of the infamous Juliaca Airport. The airport, like all of the rest of the city was a disaster just like the rest of the city. The 1940's era airport had exactly 2 gates for all of the 4 flights a day in and out. The airport is basically devoted to contraband flights so the passenger flights are actually in the way of the real money makers, counterfeit commerce. The airport was last updated a decade ago. I looked out the window at the runway and I swear I could see potholes dotting the tarmac. Unlike in the US, here in Peru you can fly with liquids, so we ... read more

Travel for work or vacation often has it's share of challenges, flying to Peru had its share of both. We departed Toledo right on time at 8:AM for the 54 mile drive to Detroit airport. Traffic was light an the weather beautiful. I had a conference call on my work assignment and things got a little emotional. Nothing bad, my team is just so passionate about what we do that emotions came through. So the drive time flew by quickly and we arrived at 9:00 AM to the car park. A quick bus ride and we were at the check in counter to drop off luggage. No one in line we headed right to the counter and hit our first snag. We were flying Delta to Miami and Avianca to Lima. We each had one checked ... read more

Today began with an excellent buffet breakfast. There was french toast, actually a toasted it tasted and looked like a peanut butter sandwich cut into 4 pieces. There were eggs and cheese scrambled, various fruits, cold cuts and cheeses. There was even sausages and other fine delicacies. Coffee was interesting. When I poured it out of the pot it looked very black and very thick. I assumed it would be bitter so I pulled our 5 sugar packets. I added a little hot milk to the coffee and it lightened up immediately. I added one sugar and tasted, hummmm, pretty good. Not bitter at all in fact it was perfect. Three cups later I was really buzzed! Our tour today was in two parts. Part one was a city tour of Lima followed by lunch then a ... read more

Today is Sunday April 15, normally tax day in the US but we have a two day reprieve since the date falls on a weekend. Being ever at the ready my taxes are filed and painfully paid for, leaving me free to prepare for my next adventure Peru. Tony has done all the are work for my books The Enochian Dilemma and now Ghost Witch, we we have some history. Bob and I not so much. Oh well how bad can it be...we will be in Peru. Preparations for me on these trips is very important so I want to detail some of my preparations. First, I did a deep google dive on all ... read more

After not getting to bed until midnight and waking up yesterday at 3.50am I wasn't too happy when the alarm when off at 7am this morning. Although I was glad we had done all of our packing the night before, it was still a struggle to get out of bed. Our taxi pickup for the airport was at 8.15am so we had some time to get ready and go for a quick breakfast before checking out. We'd put our backpacks into the flight bags early and added our hiking boots too as we no longer needed to carry them in our hand luggage in case our main bags got lost. We manhandled them to reception just in time for the taxi driver to appear and call me Katty Button again :) Our bags were carried into ... read more

After having a bit of a lie in and going for breakfast we got ready to be picked up by Fernando at 10am. He had left us a message with reception the day before to confirm he would be arriving at 10 which was nice and he was true to his word arriving bang on time. We drove through Miraflores towards the city of centre of Lima before veering off towards the harbour where he dropped us off and confirmed he would pick us up again at 2pm to take us back to the hotel after the trip. We were introduced to the guide who spoke English well and waited with three other girls who seemed to be going on the same trip. A few more people joined and when we got on board the boat ... read more

Our arrival into Arequipa at 5am marked a significant milestone for us - our last overnight bus and we won't miss them! On this particular one, we had to endure a broken speed sensor in the driver's cabin that beeped insistently for the whole night (luckily Donal had the foresight to bring earplugs so he slept grand)!! Having just completed the Inca Trail a few days earlier, one of the first things we did on arrival into Arequipa was to sign up for the 2 day 1 night Colca Canyon trek! We will have to get the hiking boots resoled! Picked up at 3am, we drove by mini bus for three hours to our starting point. Unfortunately for us, we were one of the last to be picked up by the minibus so the four of ... read more

Have a brother, or any other family member/friend you get along well with, in the country you are planning on visiting. Preferably one with a nice house and plenty of space to put you up. Travel with your mum, who prefers to get a cab when arriving at the airport instead of the local bus, saving you time, if not money. It is also way more comfortable. Don’t worry too much about the money, as your mum will insist you only pay the amount you would normally pay for that bus you didn’t take. Request a cold beer be put in the fridge by said brother for when you finally arrive at his house. There is nothing like a refreshing beer after a very long and turbulent flight. Sleep in that nice comfy bed that has ... read more
